I bought a Hogue rubber grip for my Ruger SP101 and can't get the thing on. Without the stirrup installed on the frame the grip slides right on and fits perfectly. Once I put the stirrup on I just can't work the grip all the way on. I get very close, but no cigar. I've tried different combinations but no matter how I orient the gun I just can't get the grip on.

Any ideas or suggestions?

By stirrup, you mean the piece supplied with the new grip?

If so, just line it up with the channel in the grip and rotate the grip into place.

That's what I mean but... I can get it lined up with the channel inside the grip and it goes on fine until the last 1/8 of an inch. At that point I just get stuck, no matter how much I twist rotate reorient, etc....

If you look through the hole, can you see the stirrup?

If so, try using the screw to get it the last bit.

I had the same problem with mine except I couldn't get it in that far. I found a piece of plastic flashing inside the grip and removed it, fit fine then.
Before I found the problem I had e-mailed Houge about the problem, they responded quickly with some suggestions and told me to return the grip to them for a replacement if I couldn't make it fit.

Sisco,

Never had thought that could be the problem. Definitely worth checking.

I've go Hogue grips on almost every revolver I own. Cheap fix to crappy factory grips, but now I'm starting to really like the fancy Hogue Wood grips.

It looks like I can see the stirrup through the hole but it's hard to tell for sure. Tried starting the screw, but it just pushes the grip farther off like the screw is not lining up with the threaded hole.

I don't see anything visible inside the grip that should be in the way but I'll look again.

Thanks for replies.

They can be difficult, but they will go on. Be careful with the provided screw- it's real easy to strip the end threads trying to get it started (especially if the sturrup isn't all the way down); I used another, longer screw that more easily reached the sturrup, then pulled it down and in place for the provided screw.

If you do strip it, replacements will be sent you free from Hogue- just give them a call (yes, I learned the hard way) .:banghead:

Good idea on the longer screw to pull the stirrup into place, if it's lined up, I really can't tell for sure. I'll give that a try.

Thanks

Just following up on this. Finally got this grip on. Hogue sent me a new stirrup and with that and a longer screw (thanks Coot) to get it started I got it on. I like the hogue grip much better.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.
