I’ve got a SP101 languishing in the safe that I’m thinking of having it worked over to shoot 9mm. I see where TK custom and some others offer such services. Has anyone ever had their SP converted to use moon clips and if so, how happy were you with the results? Any issues with using 38/357 without moon clips? What about reloaded brass in a converted cylinder? Appreciate any thoughts and experiences.

I have a vintage 9mm sp101, good shooter and lighter recoil than a 357. But I prefer to carry the 357 when in the woods. I always thought it would be fun to get a second cylinder converted for it.....

The .38/357 will work without moon clips assuming the conversion retains an outer rim at the back of the cylinder for the case rims to headspace off of which many conversions do. The 9mm is a tapered case so firing .38/357 in a converted cylinder probably will cause the cases to expand and not be reloadable. I think Sean has a good idea. That would alleviate the problem with the .38/357 if one is intending to fire these, too. Ideally, one would be able to find a 9mm cylinder but due to rarity this is unlikely.

I'm thinking about having Pinnacle convert a cylinder to 9MM. Their website indicates they do not recommend shooting .38/357 in the converted cylinder as it will fire form, and likely stick in the cylinder. My SP101 is a factory 9mm, and has been trouble free with any ammo I've used. Even the higher pressure stuff does not cause sticky extraction. As has been suggested, perhaps trading for a factory 9mm gun might be the most practical route though...
