Sp101 recoil.

I have the Hogue rubber grips on mine and pretty much shoot 158gn full house loads exclusively---its my most accurate gun after my .45---even more accurate than my GP100.

I have a 2-1/4" SP101 that I feed a steady diet of .38 Spcl 125 grain +P ammo... recoil is minimal and abated by the 26oz frame. I've touched off a few . 357 mag rounds to see what it was like in a snub. Very doable! As someone else mentioned.. recoil is subjective.

The most powerful thing I’ve shot would be a pistol grip only mossberg 500.
That's more than you'll feel from a sp101 loaded to atomic levels, mine made my wife cry.
Recoil is a very subjective
Recoil is very shooter subjective

It's like the baseball player with the weighted rings on his bat, used to swinging a heavier bat, less feels like nothing. Weird way to put it but it's the best analogy I've got.

In my opinion, the people who say that .357 recoil (in anything) is not bad are either lying, or have magnumitis, or they shoot a LOT and have gotten used to it.
In a 6" revolver with a full underling a heavy 357 is manageable to almost anyone. I don't lie. I do have magnumitis and I'm not joining a 12 step program...yet. I used to shoot a lot, now family life keeps me off the range every weekend.

OP- recoil is all perception . what I find brutal @MaxP or @CraigC might find tolerable . what I think is light might cause permanent injury to your hand or wrist. Technique matters but a 357 isn't likely to hurt you, may be uncomfortable but if you're dedicated you can learn to shoot a small 357 well. If it proves to be too much, download it some.

Like others have said, recoil hits people in different ways. The SP101 in .357, for reasons I cannot comprehend, hurts more to shoot than any other pistol I own. Including the 44 Magnum with wood grips. And the .454. It just hits my trigger finger in a specific manner. Before I went in with a stone, it would cut my trigger finger open on the trigger mechanism. I have tried it with Factory Grips, Hogues, and (my favorite) Pachmayrs. I actually traded it off, but when the new owner asked if I wanted it back before he sold it...I bought it back. Darn fine looking gun, and I can always shoot .38's.

Luckily, my 9mm SP101 doesn't have this problem. So I shoot it a lot.

With full house 357 it is snappy. I have a 3" and, while not uncontrollable, it is a handful. Compared to my 60-15, it is a pussycat. With fangs.

I'd rather shoot any of my full size single action big bores than a lightweight .357 J-frame. Makes my tendinitis act up quicker than anything else.

Different guns recoil differently, even with the same loads. Someone mentioned that the SP101 sits lower in your hand and that was spot on. With full magnum loads, the gun is snappy and the recoil is in the palm. Not much pressure on the wrist with this one. At worst, it stings a little...and I do mean a little. Someone else also mentioned grips, that plays an even larger role. Personally, I don't like the fit or feel of the stock SP101 grips. I swapped them out to some Hogue grips and that made a huge difference as well in over all comfort and grip I had on the firearm.

In short, I've shot much worse than that.

All,

I think recoil is more than subjective. It is also a physical action. When I went through the academy, my class started out shooting S&W 686's. Every thing was fine till we were issued our duty gun, a 3 inch barreled S&W model 13 with a round butt. I went to the nearest gun store and put a pair of PACHMAYR Compact Professionals on it and carried it that way till I turned it in for my next issued BERETTA.
One of the female officers in my class complained that the gun hurt with the 110 grain .357 magnums and was sent to the clinic where an xray found she had fractured the bones in the web of her hand. It was the only time I heard of that happening, but the model 13 is bigger and heavier than the SP101, so recoil should have been less and it still was a physical problem, not subjective.
My suggestion of trying before buying still stands.

Jim

In my opinion, the people who say that .357 recoil (in anything) is not bad are either lying, or have magnumitis, or they shoot a LOT and have gotten used to it. I find the .357 Magnum is simply not a pleasant gun to shoot.

It’s all relative....

Thanks for all the advice. Has anyone here fired a pistol grip only shotgun? Just curious how it is compared to that. 99% of the time I would be shooting 38s but just wanted to know if I were to use 357s how bad the recoil is. Some say it’s not bad while others say it’s painful. Even with the shotgun (I know it’s different) with full power loads it stings your hand, but it’s still manageable. I’m not really recoil sensitive but don’t want to be shocked either.
The only real way to know is to shoot a 357 revolver and judge for yourself. If you have a range that rents guns in your area rent a full size 357 revolver(or SP 101 If available). If you don't like shooting 357 in a full size gun, you'll not like it in a 26 oz SP101. My 2.25" SP 101 is tough on my arthritic hands but +P 38spl is a piece of cake. If CC isn't the purpose, I'd get a heavier gun like a GP100 or Speed Six which handle 357 easily. A S&W 686 is a good choice too.

Comparatively - among her class, the SP101 is a heavyweight among petites. If a person is expected to believe the recoil of a 12oz Scandium m340 in .357mag is tolerable, surely it’s reasonable then that the heaviest of the small frame 357’s, the SP101 at 29oz, can’t be so unbearable...

I like the Lett style grips on my SP101’s, and don’t find the recoil any more than “stiff.” I’m certainly faster in splits with lower recoil 38’s, but I certainly wouldn’t consider the recoil sufficiently substantial to require me to pause for recovery during any practice session. Alternatively, firing only 4 rounds from the factory skinny neck grip of the Redhawk Kodiak Backpacker will cause me enough discomfort to pause and briefly reconsider finishing the remaining two - and certainly discourage me from loading more. But poor grip-to-hand fitment is a different issue altogether compared to excessive recoil. I’ll shoot a hundred rounds from Lett style gripped SRH’s in 454 before I want to shoot even two wheels full of 44mag from the Backpacker with the factory grip.
