I carry my 3" taurus .357 when I'm out running my route, part time job twice a week for a secure spending money income. I have to collect money on Tuesdays and I'm outdoors for most of it, so the flash bang is a non-issue. But, for a house gun, yeah, I use .38 +P, much easier on the senses indoors at night. I HAVE fired a 12 gauge indoors, before, and survived the blast. But, a handgun's blast is a lot closer to you.

Consider replacing the factory grips with the Hogue grips. Takes a lot of the recoil.

Taking punishment from a handgun is not my idea of a fun day at the range. While you might enjoy the magnum load, I would suggest you consider .38 Special or .38 Special +P for your son.

Get him excited about going to the range with you (as second time) - you'll accomplish this objective by using regular old .38 Specials (and they are less expensive). Let him end the range session with a few .357 mags if he wants too.
