Space Station Crew Can Access Gun

IIRC, the gun was the Russian response a 1 or more cosmanouts being eaten by wolves after landing in Siberia.

Her own attorney said she was insane when arrested for hunting down another woman, and prosecutors said she was heavily armed.

Geez, she had a freakin' BB gun!

I don't think there is much danger of them removing the gun. If it's been there that long and there is a good reason for it to be included (It has and there is) then I doubt the Russians will be removing it.
Look at how long they used the AK.
If it's a simple plan that works, the Russians tend to stick with it.

wait, so if I'm thinking correctly... if you shot a gun in space, you would travel the opposite direction, at the same speed as the bullet right?

The cosmonauts traditionally land in the back reaches of the former USSR. That includes some incredibly remote areas and if they get off course they could find themselves a thousand miles from civilization. A firearm in the kit is just common sense. A similar firearm is required in all small aircraft flying in Alaska, for example. It has nothing to do with fighting aliens and is pretty poorly adapted for fighting rival space men lol

Our guys traditionally land in water and get picked up by the USN, or land by shuttle.

OK so this guy is RICH ENOUGH TO TAKE A VACTION ON THE SPACE STATION and he has the nerve to question how they do thier job & what equipment they take.

What an a$$!

BTW pretty neat gun, very versitale. I need one for my survial pack.

I would be more worried that the damn thing go off and put a hole in the craft. They usually don't send up foolish people, "bend on killing everyone"....

well, take into account mass. The force would be equal and opposite but the effect on varying masses would be wildly different. Think of a .12 ga off of a skateboard, not fun, but it wouldnt blast you as fast as the shot. Maybe a little faster if it were a slug, slugs have more mass. Recoil is the basic idea, with no gravity.

I guess if you were separated from the craft you could just blast away in the opposite direction and work your way back to the craft.

Ingenious!

equal and opposite reaction.....mass of a astronaut in a space suit is very much more than the mass of a bullet. while the numbers at the muzzle are equal in both directions, it is mitigated considerably by this difference.
shot the sun..in orbit you are traveling around the earth (actually falling to wards it) at around 18500 mph. this forward velocity allows you to miss the earth by the same amount you are above it, thus maintaining your orbital position. adding 500 or so mph (velocity of a handgun bullet) to this speed will not boost the bullet out of orbit. need 25,000 mph for that. it will get it to a higher orbit.

What load would you recommend for use against Klingons? They're pretty tough, you know...

I knew about the Russian survival gun for a long time....but the thought crept into my mind of a Shuttle going up, docking...and the astronauts break out a 12-gauge, a case of clay pigeons, and a hand trap.

Wonder if you could “suit up” and shoot out of an open window?;)

(close the winders when your done)

1. I want one.
2. I say they give them atomics so if there's a problem they can nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

They can orbit up above all of us and can be trusted not to crash land on top of us but a firearm is bad?

couldn't you shoot from a fixed location (like the side of the space station)? i would think the orbit/movement of the station would off set the recoil.

*chuckle* i seem to now have a mentel image of the space crew preforming 'drive by shootings' on the alians. hahahahahahahaha.....

Doesn't Tom Knapp hold a record for hand tossing simultaneously 8 clays and hitting them all before they hit the ground? I could so beat that record on the moon!:p

Just give a case full a nice light toss and start blasting. If you do it right I'm sure the clays would move slow enough to afford plenty of time to reload, too.

"The detachable shoulder-stock can also be used as a machete or a shovel."

I love it. Who but the Russians would combine a shotgun, rifle, MACHETE, and SHOVEL (!!!!) into one weapon?

Try digging for grubs or making a dugout canoe with your AR15, Yankee-doodlekov!

Aside from that bit of humor the rest of the article is absurd. If you don't trust an astronaut to behave properly around MISSION CRITICAL EQUIPMENT, LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEMS, and survival tools, then THEY SHOULDN'T BE IN THE SPACECRAFT!!!! (Yes I am shouting :banghead:)

Space missions are getting to be like Mt Everest climbs. Instead of sending up the best mountaineers it seems it more about how much diversity and least prepared can be dragged up there on the thread of survival. Astronauts are now out of shape teachers instead of the top guns and engineers.

Maybe we should just go back to sending up chimps and dogs? Unarmed of course.

all i wanna know is what happens if they screewup and land in the usa.

batfe would bag em for haveing a rifle/shotgun with less than 18"barrels.

may even burn their spacecraft if obama gets reno back as a att gen.

Aren't US astronauts acting as agents/employees of the federal gov't? As such, NFA likely doesn't apply. As for cosmonauts, I suspect the US State Dept. would have to authorize any prosections under the NFA since they would be defacto invited foreign VIP's. Just speculating...

I vaguely recall S&W model 39 as part of the gear in Gemini and Apollo being mentioned.

I carry a gun when I go camping for a weekend, around the house, or a trip to the grocery store. I don't see a problem carrying one on a trip to outerspace.

:)

You gotta wonder how many rounds they have?

Protection from wolves aside, murder/suicide in case the ship can't be recovered? I know I'd rather take one to the head than die a slow painful death in space.
