Hello, I am new here. I have a question on how to open a spam can of ammo like 7.62x25mm and 7.62x54r How would someone open one without a can opener? I try the "screw driver and hammer" but I think its unwise to smash a screw driver where primers sit!:what: I have a tiny hole open where I started from. I have this screw driver that is a pryer with two heads. Should I pry up and see if I can rip the metal off? I am just scared ill pry up and the bottom half of the screw driver hits a primer. I have never done this before. I do not have a power tool to work with to open it.

It is quite scary that they pack the bullets so close to the lid.

Take the tool that comes with your CZ-52 and wrap it around the bit of metal sticking off the can on the sides, then turn the metal around the tool. The metal will peel off, opening the spam can, like an old can of spam.

What tools? I dont have a CZ-52

So I could use a screw driver, and pry the sealed sides off? its got a lid that is welded on the can. That is what you want me to pry? Sounds much safer

There should be a tab on the side. Take a pair of pliers and grab that tab, then turn the metal around the piers till it peels open. The metal will come off in a ribbon.

If there is no tab, come at it from the side away from the primers and punch a hole with a screwdriver. Reach in with needle nose pierers and bend out a piece. Roll the piece to open.

I do not have a tab.

I did that, very very very close to the edge, far away from the primers. But I see brown paper on the very tip of the wall so there jammed pack in there. I am just scared to PRY hard with this little hole I have because, It might strike a primer as I am pulling/pushing

If you have "spam cans" of Eastern Bloc ammo there should have been a stange looking tool that came with it. It's actually a large can opener. This is usually found on top of the metal can inside the crate/carton.

Got a picture of the type of can?

Opening it with the proper tool goes like this -

It is easier if you put the can up on something so you can stand instead of wallowing around on the floor.

If all else fails you can do this with a screw driver and a hammer, but they aren't the tools for the job.

BTW, you don't have to worry about the primers or the ammo unless you do something very stupid like hammering on the primers using a screw driver or a punch (and then you're only likely to damage the primer rendering it useless).

Did you buy the ammo cans in a pair in a wood box or individually? the can opener is in the wood box, if they came individually then you probably would not have gotten one. In that situation I have used a cold chisel and a hammer to do a lap around the top keeping the chisel almost horizontal so as to not go too deep. The end result is exactly the same as using the can opener, just more work.

I just got 1 it is individually. It didnt come with a tab nor a can opener :(

I used the chisel and hammer method. There are no tabs. And I didn't have an opener. Huge pain but got the job done.

Ok I got a big hole in it now I just have to work it back and forth. Thanks for your help :)

If u have a bayonet handy and a hammer, that should do it. I used my Bulgarian bayonet supplied with those AK kits and it worked perfect.
Use caution and dont penetrate the sides too deep. Slant the angle towards the sides and thats should do it.

I have seen places selling it saying you don't get an opener with on can, only if you get both cans in the crate. Wonder what they do with the extra ones.

its ok I already got it open :) Thanks for your offer though. Next time I will be ordering the ones with can openers same price but steel cased ammo. I have no clue why it doesnt come with the can opener? what are they doing with those extras......:what::scrutiny:

WEll, they only packed one tool per wooden case ... two tins to a case. In general the only way to insure getting the tool is to order a full case.

Once you get the tool you can SAVE it for future cans.;) The price of the cans is most often more when you get the tool, go figure!!! One of my buddies had one of those can openers like they use in a commercial kitchen that goes in a hole in the bench and you push it down and turn a crank to open a #10 (gallon) can. We used it successfully to open several cans of ammo in the past.:D
