Good evening all, just wanted to share a seemingly straight forward repair and an oddity.
The gun.
M1916 Spanish mauser in 308 win
The symptoms.
When the first round is loaded in the magazine it "pops out" won't stay put. Last round occasionally doesn't engage the claw on the bolt, won't feed.
Diagnosis.
After some reading I checked to make sure the sides of the internal box weren't hanging the follower up. All good there. Next suggestion weak magazine spring. I thought it plausible, being far from being a mauser expert, not a lot of spring tension there so I found a replacement on brownwells.
The part.
Its a spring not much too it. Its identified for a 98 mauser and listed as compatible with the 93 style.
The replacement
Comparing the new one vs the 100 year old one. The replacement is beefier for one. Second the side for the follower on both springs has a bevel on it. On the Replacement both magazine side and follower side are equal length, the m1916 the follower side is shorter. A bit of test fitting, no go. Need to trim about half inch off the beveled(follower)side so it fits nicely in the recess.
Results
The first round stays put, the last round feeds as intended. Success.... With a twist. The 98 spring is beefier, which cuts the mag capacity to 4 rounds not 5. Maybe with a few hundred rounds through it it will loosen up and I can fit 5 in it. I'm not concerned, the function is correct. It will live a life of ease with mild handloads and maybe go hunting one day.
