Probably a bolt-action .300 Winchester Magnum with a stainless finish, shooting heavy-for-caliber bullets.

There. That wasn't so hard...

Pfffffffft....................Yeah.........IF you're a city hunter.

Bushkins don't use anything bigger than a .30-06.

I hunt pretty much everything with a Winchester Model 70 270.
I love my bolt action, I love my Leupold Optics.

I haven't hunted North American game that doesn't drop from a well placed shot.

Well, let me preface this by saying that I don't hunt anything larger than prarie dogs, occassionaly. Being that I live in Maine, it is only very occasionally.:( But, here in Maine, Moose guns generally start at the 35 Whelen cartridge and encompass everything from the 444 Marlin and the 45/70 up to the mega magnums. I would hazard a guess that around these parts that the most common is the 30-06. [politics snipped]

Let me be the first to ask, can I hunt moose with a 10 mm

Answer : Of course. You can hunt them with a .22LR but it's not legal nor ethical.

Real moose hunters use standard, slightly-heavy-for-deer calibers like .30-06, 7mm Rem. Mag and .300 Win. Mag 'cause sometimes they're faced with an animal weighing 1100-1200 lbs. That's a far cry from a 120-200 lb. whitetail.

It's the city showoffs who thinks it's macho to bring a .338 or larger into camp. It'll surely do the job - IF they can shoot it w/o flinching. Many can't & many miss. A cannon ball that misses won't put much meat on the table but a well-placed .30-30Win will make you proud.

A .375 throws a bigger bullet easier, and with less fanfare, than a .30 caliber rifle does... Sure, you can shoot a 200-220 grain bullet with a .300 winmag, but you're getting into "pushing things" territory... Why not just use a bigger bore?

Remember - you can always load at the light end of the spectrum. And you've got a rifle you can show your friends - Yeah, that's my elephant gun.

Well her nickname as a high school basketball player was "Sarah Barracuda" for her aggressiveness, so I don't think she even needs a gun - she could just jump out of a tree and wrench their necks!

But in seriousness, I've got a CZ550 FS in 9.3x62 which I would *love* to take on a moose hunt.

Incidentally, Sarah Palin is without a doubt my ultimate dream girl, for obvious reasons. I understand she's 'spoke for', however. :)

I understand that lots of Canadian moose have ended up in the freezer after being shot with an old .303 British.

If I had the chance to hunt moose it would be a choice of either my Browning BAR in .30-06, or the Marlin Guide Gun in .45-70 that I recently acquired.
If I was going out this week it would be the BAR because I don't have ammo for the Marlin .45-70 yet.

?? This is just getting bizarre. Where do people get these insane ideas? YOU DO NOT NEED A MAGNUM RIFLE TO HUNT MOOSE. Lots of folks use a .338 WM or similar up here because that's their main AK rifle. It will work of course. But anything from .30-30 level on up will work at proper ranges. Under no stretch of the sane imagination is a 200-220 bullet out of .300 wm "pushing it" for moose. They have relatively thin skin and a key target area much larger than a man's torso. Their chests are enormous and they aren't noted for being leapers. The hard part about moose hunting is not shooting one. The hard parts are finding the one you can hunt and want to hunt at the right time of year, then butchering it and hauling out the meat in a land with few roads. It's insides just seem to keep going and going, there's so much of it.

Here is my moosegun.

As far as carrying it? Well, moose are known to be very sneaky sons of guns, attacking when least expected. I think in order to carry it I would need to get a tactical drop-leg quick-draw holster.

Bogie not want to chase moose.

If I'm gonna use a 200-220 grain bullet, I wanna throw it out of something a little larger in diameter than .308... It's not that a .300 is "pushing it" for moose, but I don't really see them as being all that happy with the heavier bullets... I was talking about ballistics.

It's that simple. I'd rather download a larger bore to .300 winmag or .30-06 terminal ballistics, and throw a big hunka lead. Remember - you can download a .375 to .300 all day long, but you can load a .300 to .375 -once-.

Besides - dead moose might attract live big hungry critter with teethies. I like to be live bogie. Nothing says the extra rounds in my pocket have to be light ones...

Cosmoline, do you carry a .380? A 9mm? I carry a .45... Because they don't make a .46.

(grin)

.338 Win. Mag. , not that it is needed, but I have one, and there be bears up there.

Scotsman goes up to Canada, driving down the highway a moose trots out onto the pavement.

"Great Scot! What's that?" says the Scotsman.

"It's a moose." replies the Canuck . . .

"A moose! I'd hate to see your freekin' rats!" :D

A favored caliber for the "big stuff" in AK is the .458 Win. Mag. -- at 65 ft. lbs. recoil, I'm betting Palin doesn't shoot one. Moose are comparatively tame. "Big stuff" would be brown bear, Kodiak, and grizzly.

I would have to agree with many folks here that you don't need all that much gun for a moose. I have never hunted moose, but plenty of Elk, Deer, Bear, and Hog. 30-06 will kill anything in North America with the right ammo and shot placement. Gotta go with what I know.

Just like self defense.. Shot placement is key. Moose aren't hard to kill if you hit them right.

Hard to move? That's a whole nother story!!!:what:

Two moose for Sister Sara. :D;)

Hey I will admit that she does have the whole attractive librarian thing going on.

My uncle used a 1/2 ton chevy pickup truck. However it only works one time.
Now THAT is some EXPENSIVE ammo!
Well, it helps if you're into reloading.

Of course, in this situation you have to own an auto body shop to do it.

It's not the caliber of the rifle, it's the WELL PLACED SHOT that kills the moose. Take the one you can hit with and go hunting!! .30-30 has probably killed more moose than all others combined, and .30-06 is more than plenty.
