While I agree the expanded bullets look similar the Starfire used flutes in the HP to try to direct hydraulic forces to the thinner parts of the bullet and to aid expansion. The HST uses a conventional HP and does not use this principle.
HST ribs and flutes are swaged into the cavity wall during one manufacturing process then the hollowpoint wall is swaged into a conventional (cylindrical) hollowpoint wall in a subsequent process. The result is a Starfire bullet in which the ribs and flutes aren't physical contours within the cavity but become exposed, increasing surface area for fluid pressure to impinge upon, as the bullet expands. The hollowpoint cavity of the Gold Dot bullet is manufactured in a similar process.
 
Well, I think we can agree there is one major difference between them anyhow. The HSTs seem to WORK. I never thought the Starfires worked very well at all.
