Speer load data

Browsing Midway's catalog for a 200gr or so SWC in .452". Speer has one for a decent price but raised a question.

Speer JHPs have specific load data, do the cast lead SWCs? I don't have a speer manual, got Modern Reloading which has listings for cast lead loads which I was gonna try out; the book just says "xxx grain cast bullet".
 
Go to their web page and look up the contact. I *think* it is [email protected] but I'm not anywhere I can look (or I'm lazy). If you email them, they will send a PDF for free for the particular caliber you are looking for with all the different bullets. Robert replied back to me with in 24 hrs and has been very helpful with my questions.
 
Hafded: I have shot this Speer 200gr LSWC exclusively in my two 1911's for target work and plinking for many years now and am extremly pleased with it's performance. The current #14 Speer manual lists many different loads for this bullet and if you advise the powder(s) you want to use, I would be glad to send you for starting and maximum loads. :)
 
thanks loadedround..im looking for 45colt load data not 45 ACP.. im basically looking for the entire section on 45colt but dont want to spend the money on the book for a few pages. mainly interested in SWC and JHP loads though. not sure what powder i`ll be using; whatever i can find i guess.

No, you can use data from other sources (powder manufacturers, etc.) and manuals for most lead bullets. Use regular old common sense and compare a few sources to be sure you are starting at below a max load for the powder you choose.

In truth, the same goes for Speer jacketed bullets as well. Just be sure to use data for like-for-like types of bullets, both weight and profile.

The current Lyman Reloading Handbook is an excellent source for lead bullet load data.
 
Load for the bullet weight. Who made it doesn't matter. Use cast/lead bullet data only. Cast bullets can't be driven as fast as a jacketed bullet.
Hodgdon's site has .45 Colt, 200 grain, cast bullet loads.

Speer 45 lswc bullets are swaged, not cast as far as i know. They are used for loading lite to midrange target loads. Not the same as a cast bullet that is harder.
Cast bullets can't be driven as fast as a jacketed bullet.

Yes they can. In 45acp,colt, 44mag other. The swaged bullets can Not.

I think you are making a big mistake in not buying and using a good loading manual, but then one mans's potion is another man's poison. You may get the necessary loading data by going to Hodgdon Powder's website at www.hodgdon.com BTW, these Speer 200gr LSWC's are cast and have never been swaged. :)
 
They are swaged with a rolled on crimp cannulure & dry lube.
I can't remember a time when any Speer lead bullets were ever cast.

They even state in the Speer manual for RCBS cast bullet cowboy loads that:
We sell molds, not cast bullets.

I do have a loading manual, Lee's Modern Reloading, however I'm not gonna go breaking the bank to buy every single load book that's out there for a couple pages. I also frequent Hodgdon's site, valuable material there as well. I think it's kind of a racket that you have to buy (or they want you to think this way anyhow) a special book just for that specific manufacturer. I looked for a book that covered the broadest range of loads, and settled between Modern Reloading and Lyman's. Still gonna buy the Lyman's for comparative value and information.

Looked at Modern Reloading a little more and in the section that explains how to read the load charts they say that the listings for Hornady's XTP line are also good for Speer. Guess I ended up answering my own question.
 
Already got 'em. The press kit I bought included the Hodgdon freebie, actually. Appreciate the heads up though.
 
And as I already said, Speer will send you a PDF on the caliber you want. Just email them and ask. I received an email within 24 hrs and now I have data for every 9mm they make.
 
Got a response from Speer within a few hours with a PDF of the info I requested. Looks like they just photocopied the pages I was interested in. Havent gotten a chance to compare their data with what Modern Reloaading lists as acceptable though. My only other problem is those darned jacketedd bullets are so expensive, especially when compared to lead. Maybe I`m just cheap! Think Im gonna try out the LSWC over a little Universal and see how that works.
Still waiting for someone to define the term "working load". Is that a woods carry, kinda all purpose round or what?
