I recently picked up a copy of Guns Digest book of Combat Handgunnery. The book sings high praises of swc spelunker rounds. what became of this term? Why is it no longer used?

I don't know that it was ever used anywhere but in that book.
Which I have not read BTW.

It has not ever been a common handgun bullet term in my almost 50 years experiance.

Lead SWC Keith style bullets are still widely used for hunting & SD.
But I have never heard them called "spelunker rounds".

Spelunker may refer to a person who explores caves.
Spelunker is a video game.
Spelunker was a ride at Six Flags over Texas.

But Bullets? Not so much!

In the book there is several pics. of clay that's been used to show the expansion of various defensive rounds. One of the rounds mentioned is reffered to as a swc spelunker. I believe they used the term because of the penetration.

Edit, The rounds were essentially concave man stoppers which where reffered to as spelunkers.

Very likely.

But again, that referance in the book is the only place I ever heard of it before.

Keith style SWC bullets are noted for deep penetration in any medium.

I THINK it is referring to a big, hollowpoint bullet that is almost straight sided, and has a huge, I believe Hex shaped cavity in the nose. I have only seen .45. I believe it is currently produced by someone...don't know whom...

Uh oh, in addition to debates on "mags", "clips", "gats", and "pieces" now we have to deal with "spelunkers"!
