I picked up an Arisaka Type 99 from a family friend this past weekend, and it looks like it has been sporterized and rechambered. He said that his father used to hunt with it, so it should still be servicable after I clean, service, and figure out what it has been rechambered to. The bluing and stock appear to be in good condition and I havent been able to find any rust on it. The muzzle reads .312 with my calipers.
It seems that the 300 Savage was a common caliber for these conversions, is that where I should start?

I purchased a sporterized type 99 about 5 yrs ago for $80. extremely well done I have to think that the barrel was pulled and cut back and rechambered using a 30-06 ream and headspacing it to 7.7x58 specs because I can not use 7.7 brass but I can use reformed and fired 30-06. I load 150 gr. Hornady spire point and IMR4895. very good shooter.

A very nice looking Arisaka. While most of us would never chop up an original military these days, many nice sports were produced this way. The .300 marking makes it very likely it is a .300 Savage. If a .300 fits the chamber nicely, you should be good to go. Many of these barrels shoot quite well with .308 dia. bullets, thought hey are undersize.
