Hi guys.

So, recently it has come up OFTEN that ammo prices are high and people make speculations as to why, when they will come down, etc. etc.

Somebody on the forum recently mentioned the idea of me trying to take a formal look at the situation. Whether or not I'm qualified is anybody's guess as I only hold my BBA in Economics (not MBA, nor phd level), but I'll give it a try.

There's a fair amount of data I'll need, and I'll try to contact ATK, Winchester, et al. to see if they can provide me with some of it, but one thing you guys could help me with is "spot prices".

I'm going to use Remington UMC 9mm (115 grain) and Remington UMC .40S&W (180 grain), and the same two for Winchester White Box. so basically - next time you're at the store and see 9mm or .40S&W in those grains by those brands, if you could just either mentally note the price, or write it down, and then post:

Date : Product (including #of cartridges in box) : Price

Also, if you have any historical memory of prices for these, or happen to keep receipts, and can provide me with past prices, that would be fantastic. As far back as possible would be great. If you have to estimate date for those that's ok. I'm just trying to first develop a general timeline of the prices, then start looking at what possible correlations there could be (we're not just talking the war, or the price of components here, we're talking foreign markets, other products using the same raw materials, and just in general both a micro and macro look at the situation).

I'm going to try to contact Walmart and see if they have kept any data on historical pricing of their ammo that they would be willing to share. (I'm guessing the answer to #1 is yes, but no to #2 - but I'll call anyways).

This isn't for any school, it's actually for you guys. I'm going to take a look at the situation and try to see what deductions can truly be made. There's too much speculation and not enough fact floating around here.

I hope I can help, and I hope you can help me do so.

(help me help you as the cliche goes)

WWB was $15.88 last Saturday at my Walmart.

Keep in mind, not all retailers charge the same price.

Interesting project - good luck with it.

I don't know if you also want internet mail order ammo prices but in case you do. Sportsmanguide.com has Wolf steel case 9mm 115 FMJ @ $44.97 per box of 250 rounds. Boxes (cases) of 1,000 rds are slightly less.

Regards,
Rob

of course. Basic stat tools/techniques should take care of this though. :)

This is probably going to take me some time to complete as it's not an easy issue, but I'll give it a shot.

Yeah, sure. Ammo by the case is fine. I'm looking for the moment to just generate a basic timeline of spot prices and then once I have that take it from there.

I like this poll I cannot tell you 9mm or 40 cal. but we have 4 wal marts within a 20 miles of each other I bought all the white box winchester 100 round 45 acp they had at one for 11.00 a box the next closest to me had none on shielf but it was 28.95 the third had 2 boxes at 21.95 and the 4th is not selling handgun ammo for the near future. The store that I bought from gave me a rain check for a case if the get the shipment they are supost to get from a chicago store that is no longer selling ammo.

bump as some time has elapsed and I'm hearing people mention a recent or soon to come price increase.

I know you can buy Remington umc 9mm at Dick's for 6.98 a box but you have to buy at least 10 boxes. That's only $70 for 500...I bought 1500 rounds

When I first started buying ammo at 9 yo in 1980 I could buy a box of 50 .22 lr from the hardware store at 10th and Macvicar for $.39 for Remmington. When I graduated from High school it was $.59 for a box of American Eagle. By the time I joined the military in 1993 it was $.89 for Winchester with the leapord on the box. When I got out in 2000 it was $1.29 for Winchester X. Over the past 3 yrs we have seen staggering increases usually associated with shipping costs going up. (That ammo is one heavy load). I usually kept track of .22 lr because it was the one caliber all the guys could get together and shoot all day.

doc2rn - if you get a chance, post recent prices you've paid for ammo in the format at the top of the thread.

After a while, we can all look back and use the data to see what's going on, if it's as pronounced as people say, and maybe make some predictions about at least the short term.

The latest "sale" locally for me on UMC 250rd boxes:

4/9/08 : 9mm Remington UMC 250rd : $49.89
4/9/08 : .40S&W Remington UMC 250rd : $69.89
4/9/08 : .45 ACP Remington UMC 250rd : $79.89

been a little while. Time to add some data.

WWB Value Pack 100 rounds of .40 SW 165 grain = $25.68 a box at local Wally World.

post em if you got em.

Winchester FMC 9mm 115 gr. - 50 rounds - $6.00 - 1967.

McDonalds paid $1.15 an hour to start, so let's call it 5x minimum wage. Minimum wage is now $5.85, so 5x is almost $30.

These are the good old days.
