I see that the US government is buying over 92,000,000 rounds various ammo. For Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Afghanistan National Security Forces and the Government of Iraq. See http://www.fbo.gov/spg/USA/USAMC/DAA...tion 01.html

Boys and girls expect prices to skyrocket shortly.

A few years ago I began to purchase ammo and store it ammo cans when the prices were somewhat cheap, $9.99 a box of 50 for .45 and .40S&W. I purchased a few boxes at a time as well as a case here and there. I have a few thousand rounds of .45, .40S&W, .223, and other calibers that I shoot.

My little lady says "you got enough ammo for WWIII". I just say you can never have enough. So my question is how much do you guys have in reserve? Do you keep a reserve, not the stuff you bring to the range. I'm thinking of getting one of those shrink wrap machine that removes all the air and seals those plastic bags, but that could be expensive. Meantime air-tight ammo cans work very well.

What do you think? Stock up now before the prices go even higher.

Thanks for your input.

I think you should have thought of that long before this. It's a lot more expensive now than it was a year or two ago. However, by all means stock up whatever you can afford to now.

I keep my ammo in surplus ammo cans, mostly 50cal and fat 50cal cans. I always save those little desicent packs whenever I get new shoes, electronics, etc and throw them in the cans.

I have sealed some 22LR in bags just to try it(borrowed the machine), but those bags aren't that tough and tear easily.

I have 24- .30 and .50cal ammo cans full of reloads and NIB, while probably enough I think I should have about 10,000 more rounds.

True.

If nothing else it's better than saving money.

For instance the 7.62x39 that I'm shooting now cost me $58/1,000 and $4.38-$6.00/50 for the several thousand 9mm WWB I've salted away.

At the last gun show I was complaining about how much the cost of reloading components has gone up. My friend said, "You think it's high now, wait until next year".

I reload for everything I shoot but have put away a lot of factory ammo also.
Stored in 50cal ammo cans these 45ACP will last longer than me.:)

This is a loaded question (pun intended) :).
But seriously folks, think about it. If I were all of you I wouldn't be writing, publicly , about how much ammo I have stored. I just got a letter in the mail from the NRA warning that a new bill is before congress giving the the Attorney General carte blanche to take your guns and ammo away if he even *suspects* you of terrorism. :what:
Where do you suppose they'll start looking first? Maybe right here on this discussion board (and others like it). Especially threads that talk about how many guns and how much ammo ya'll have. Just sayin' be careful what you discuss. I know it sounds paranoid but with the current trend of anti-gun sentiment I'm not taking any chances ;).
I have no guns and I certainly don't have any ammunition....

Anyone worried about something like that shouldn't ever be on a gun forum.
Even the dumbest Fed can figure out that if you are on a gun web site you probably have guns and ammo.

There's easier ways to track you down than through a internet site. Buy a new gun lately?

All of the "stockpiling" is a huge part of the reson why the prices keep going up. Ammo sales numbers are through the roof and keep climbing, of course the prices aren't going to come down. All of the "raw materials" and "production capacity" arguments are valid but, IMHO, pale in comparison to simple consumer demand. It's .223, .308, and 7.62X39, mostly of the FMJ variety, that have seen the worst price increases, and that's exactly what the hoarders are stockpiling....

Stock up. Ammo isn't going down in price neither is anything else gas etc... Just received e-mail from local gun store that federal is expecting a 15% increase in its ammo prices Sept 1st. Just in time for dove season i guess.

I remember when they said this last summer about gas when it was over $3/gallon. 3 months later it was $2.10. Copper is already predicted to fall by the end of 2007. Once the demand goes down for ammo and the materials they are made of, the prices will drop. Of course, the current military action combined with people buying all they can at high prices doesn't entice anyone to lower prices. China's copper demand will eventually dwindle. While we may never see prices of $150/1000 rnds of 5.56, we will most certainly see prices of $200-225/1000 again. But by all means, stock up now. When you're sitting on 20,000 rounds you bought at $300/1000, that just means there will be less demand to help the prices come down quicker.
