Is there a way to tell the difference between small pistol primers and small rifle primers. I have CCI41's and CCI500 primers and loaded one of the two in my Lee auto priming system a month or so ago and of course forgot which it was.

If they are SRP will it hurt to load 9mm with them? There are about 30 in there so not a big if I have to dispose of them but if so, how if the best way to dispose of them?

Thanks

Look at the color of the primer seal lacquer in both the 41 & 500 boxes.

They may be a different color, but I don't know.

They may work in the 9mm if your gun will set them off.

But back off the powder charge if you are anywhere near a max load.

The best way to dispose of them is put them in an old plastic pop bottle with a little water or oil in it and throw it in the trash.

The best way to avoid this happening again is to leave only the box of primers you are using out on the bench
Or stick a small piece of blue masking tape on the primer tray lid and write down whats in it.

Thanks rc, I appreciate it.

I'll see if there is a color difference. I normally keep the box on the bench but told myself that I was going to finish all of these up in one sitting so I threw the box. Didn't work out too well.

That is a really good idea about the blue tape though. I'll grab some next time I'm at the store.

Thanks for the help.

Good luck. I've examined CCI 500, 550, and 400's side by side, and I can't tell the difference.

I thought rifle primers whether large or small are taller than pistol primers both large or small. Try putting one of each side by side. If one cup is taller than the other, it should be the rifle primer.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
