For some reason I'm being drawn to a M1A/M14 leaning towards a Scout. Springfield or Fulton Armory?
Thanks.

Don't forget LRB and Smith as well.

All good choices.

Frankly these days it's finding someone without a long waiting list :)

I am very pleased with my Springfield M1A Loaded. It is accurate and reliable. I have no complaints. If I was going to spend more than what Springfield wanted for their M1A, I would get the LRB. They have the only forged receiver in the business.

Springfield makes the Scout Squad, it has an 18.0" barrel and it's very nice.
If you want something better, have Smith Enterprise, Inc. build a MK14 for
you on the receiver of your choice and put it in the stock of your choosing.

A related question: if you want to get an M14 pimp'd with one of those nifty Troy Industries stocks, what do you need?

Contact LAW483 for the M14 MCS stock a& flip up battle sights from TROY
and pick out the butt stock and pistol grip that you want.

Springfield..........an older rifle, as old as you can find, preferably under 100k serial number. An older gun will most likely be stuffed with GI parts, and with some patient shopping can be bought cheaper than new.

I wholeheartedly agree with MTMilitiaman on this one. I have a standard Springfield M1A of mid-nineties vintage with all USGI parts (sans receiver, of course) and it has been an excellent performer. One has to spend much more money to get something better, IMO.

I have to agree with with vanfunk. I have a entry level older M1A that shoots better than I can hold it. Most of the guys I shoot with seem the think that the more upscale variants start strutting their stuff after you get beyond 300 yards.

I think my main interest is long-term reliability and durability. Probably not willing to spend the extra money for 1mm more of accuracy. In the opinion of those who know, is the Springfield version pretty much just as durable over the long haul than any of the higher dollar offerings?
Thanks again.

Springfield M1As are normally reliable and SAI does have a good warranty and a fine custom shop.

I have owned two M1A rifles for almost twenty years now, one since 1990 and one since 1991.
Both have fired rounds numbering in the thousands, both have been rebarrelled due to wear.
Both rifles use USGI componenets paired to Springfield Armory receivers, one uses Springfield Inc. barrel and both still have Springfield Inc. operating rods.

Neither rifle shows any signs of the receivers wearing out anytime in my lifetime.
The rest of the components can be rebuilt or replaced as needed.

This is the beauty of USGI rifles, they are designed to be rebuildable as needed.

The USGI parts that seem to be the most difficult to find for the M14 type rifles right now are operating rods and bolts.

Springfield Inc. is producing acceptable replacements for these parts now and their gas cylinders are excellent.

Sadlak Industries and Badger Ordnance produce excellent replacement pistons and operating rod guides.

Trigger groups can be easily rebuilt using M1 Garand components.

M14 type rear sights can be rebuilt using M1 Garand rear sight components and front sights are available from a number of sources.

There are still a large number of USGI trigger housings on the market.
