M1A / M14 question

The M1A is probably more like the 1911 platform than the AR platform. I've been reading everything I can about the gun because I'm in the market for some sort of .308 autoloader, and the more I read, the more it seems that M1A owners deal with the same sort of issues as do 1911 owners. The higher the state of tune, the more fussy the gun.

But being compared to a 1911 is no bad thing. Having the option to tune the gun to such a high degree is an advantage. Try that with a BAR. Plus the M1A shares the same rich history as the 1911.

If these were cars, the AR would be like a modern 4.6-liter Mustang, and the M1A would be a 1969 Camaro. Both are functional, both look great--it's just a matter of personal preference.

So what is the holy-grail of the M14 world? I once thought it was a SA National Match, medium heavy douglas on walnut. But after viewing this thread, maybe not much...
It's different things to different people. Some guys dig those short barrel Smith EBR...things...with all the rails and doodads hanging off of them.

Some folks are old school and want an off-the-shelf version stuck in a walnut stock without hacking the barrel off and installing muzzle brakes, Vortex flash hiders, whatever.

Like every other firearm, it's all up to the individual. :)

To me, I'd want a forged LRB receiver gun with as many USGI parts as can be crammed in it. 1:10 Obermeyer or Kreiger, fat McMillan stock, welded gas system, lapped sights, double lugged and bedded, assembled with care by a good M14 plumber.

Old school traditional as close to original as possible. That's me. I think I want an LRB now.

Gewehr98,

I saw your post about your M1A/M14 that you started off with a reciever from Armscorp.

Aside from the reciever, stock, barrel, and parts kit, is there really anything else that you need?

Being in the Marine Corps, I have a good knowledge of firearms, but this would be my very first build.

Is this something I could do on my own? Approx. how much would it cost?

I don't need match parts or performance, my intention would be to have a "Standard" M1A/M14.

Any help is VERY MUCH appreciated!

Semper Fi, brother.
