And despite what some post the 700 has been the premier rifle for accuracy since it was introduced and still is. Although there are several worthy challengers these days that are guaranteed to shoot 1moa.
I was able to shoot one hole groups with an M14 so accuracy is not really an issue, but weight is as I made that same choice years ago.

The 700 will likely be lighter, more accurate, have a much better trigger and be less expensive, leaving plenty of money left over for a good scope.I have seven different variants of it,and they are all fine deer rifles. But why, dammit why do I keep slobbering over the pics of the SOCOM?

I would get a M14 clone... that way you have a gun that can really be enjoyed the other 51 weeks of the year, after deer hunting is over.

That said, that is only if you are an iron sight fan - IMO the M14 platform is horrible for optics.

Thanks ya'll. I had been planning on the 700 all along. Only reason I started considering the M1A was to serve a SHTF purpose also.

Weight & cost points that were made have pretty much confirmed that I need to stay with the bolt gun.

Wish me luck next fall!

Yup. M1A's cost quite a bit more than M700's do.;)

While it makes for a more versatile multi use rifle compared to bolt actions IMO, it will cost ya.

Good luck next fall, and stay safe.
