I'd like to own a practical and very rugged repeating (not bolt action).308. I am not able to spend $1500 on an M1A (I realize the M1A is semi-auto) but have heard good things about the pump Remington, and there's a law enforcement version available in .308 with 16.5 inch barrel that looks like a good alternative for my needs. In such a short barrel, could 400 yard shots still be accurately made with a good scope? Are magazines with higher capacity that 4 rounds available?

Accuracy would have to be determined by your individual rifle/ammo setup.
You may get a superbly accurate rifle, or one that's just OK.
With Remington, you usually get good semi-auto rifle accuracy.

I have seen larger capacity magazines for the Remington autos. I think these were 8 shot, but quality was suspect.

One thing to remember. The Remington would likely be a good, accurate rifle for you, but it ISN'T a true battle rifle.

In other words, you will not be able to shoot lots of rounds fast.
The Remington is a commercial SPORTING rifle, and was never intended to be fired at a high rate of fire.
The Remington was intended to be fired at game, a few shots at a time.

The rifle will overheat quickly, and under sustained fire, will cease to function much faster than a "real" battle rifle.

As long as you don't intend to bang off 20 or 30 rounds rapid fire, the Remington would probably serve your needs.

One firearms author wrote an article about why battle rifles make good hunting rifles.
He stated that the difference was, if you fired a battle rifle and a Remington 100 rounds rapid fire, the Remington almost certainly wouldn't finish the 100 rounds before it failed.

There was a time when I was pretty interested in the 7400 (semi auto), and was asking the same questions. Someone said that they have 10 round aftermarket magazines out, but I've not seen them.

The woodstocked 7400, if it works as advertised, might be a pretty nifty rifle for those who want semi-auto repeat shots, accuracy, and power, in an unoffensive-looking package that doesn't scream "EVIL BLACK RIFLE!!!".

Get a VEPR

You should consider the EAA VEPR Hunter rifle. You can check them out at EEA CORP They are based on the Kaloshnikov design and are quite hunter friendly. Supposed to be accurate too and well priced at around $500.

USA makes 10 rnd mags for the 7400. Some work some don't. Just keep sending them back until you get lucky and get a good one (s).

7400's are not battle rifles but they're a decent stand in and good for general use.
