I just picked up a brand spanking new Springfield Mil-Spec 1911. In the shop I was very impressed with this gun. It has a very nice finish and looked to be pretty tight and well made. When I got it home, I found something that leaves me scratching my head.

The serial number on the frame is NM 3...... When I feld stripped it I found a number stamped inside the slide like NM 28...... and an electropencil entry of the frame serial number. Everything appears new. Basically, it looks like my frame got an older missmatched slide then they force matched it like a Mosin Nagant. Is this normal?

Are you expecting the number on the slide, and frame to match?

I don't think that's how they do it.

I had two mil spec Springfields, the slide hung out over the back of the frame a bit. They're not hand fitted or anything but they are great guns and are well made IMO.

My NM serial mil spec, is the tightest 1911 I have owned, actually needing a bushing wrench! There is no play at all in the frame to slide fit, and yeah, it don't look great at the rear like CNobbe mentioned. Great shooter! The numbers on the inside of the slide, do not match the frame, and the scribed numbers don't match either frame or slide... I wouldn't sweat it:)

Interesting. JD, the force match doesn't match either? I guess it I shouldn't be concerned. Everything looks new, in fact the slide was a bit gritty riding on the phosphated rails. The phosphate hadn't even worn off yet.

Thinking about it, my understanding is that the forgings are done in Brazil. Maybe the frames and slides are seperated in shipping. I won't worry about it. Thanks, gang.

That had been the case. Springfield 1911's were made by Imbel in Brazil. The latest I've heard is that Springfield has ended their agreement with Imbel and are now sourcing from a US maker, though I haven't heard who.
