I dug out an old Springfield Model 67 Series C in 20 gauge out of the closet that my dad had bought years ago. I'm not sure if he ever shot it or not, but I liked the fact that it is a 20 gauge. I tried to find some info on it but there doesn't seem to be much (or else my Google-fu is weak). What little I did find was along the lines of "cut it up and throw it away". So, this begs the question, are they really that bad?

For what?

This was a budget model pump gun back in the day.Think Maverick 88 before CNC machining. So, it has a reputation for a rather rough action and there is a body of evidence that suggests parts are not made of high quality steel.

Would I bet my life on it as my home defense weapon? No I would not. Would I be afraid to shoot it? No, I would not. It's not a great hunting or target gun, but it may be ok. Take it to the patterning board and see what you get and how it feels to shoot. If you don't like it, put it on GB for $300 and enjoy the fruits of the Biden-Covid panic.

Well, right off the bat I find that the shell stop isn't doing its job. I don't know if it's broken or just bent wrong. I guess I need to find a photo to compare it to.

I've owned a couple of them over the years and have had no trouble with them. Both 20 ga. Back in the late 70's I had one that I cut the barrel to 20" for hunting rabbits in the brush with. That gun was used a lot without a hitch. Later sold to a friend and he and his family have used it for years to hunt rabbits and it's still going strong as far as I know. Tried to buy it back from him but he won't sell it. :(
I'd buy another in a moment if it was an early one. I understand the later ones were the victims of cost cutting measures and not nearly as reliable. Probably where the bad reputation comes from.

Dads 67 was bought in 68 it's a 12 but has always worked. Nothing fancy, but dropped a doe a 119 paces with a slug out of a mod choke.
