what's the word on the springfield XD 45 ACP. give me opinions. it fits my budget. some things id like to know are: is it enough gun for the money, or should i wait and save up to spend around 1k; i will end up getting these accessories, anyway is this a bagain; what is the general perception of this weapon; what are advantages and disadvantages.

I bought my XD45 Tactical in March of this year. Now after 4000+ rounds I can truley say that this a great gun! I had 2 or 3 FTE's in about the first 200-250 rounds. I put that down as being new & a little stiff. I had my gunsmith do a trigger job at around 500 rounds. He set it at 4lbs & I cant find anything wrong with this pistol. It is very acurate & will eat most anything I feed it. And it eats it fast!;)

I got a XD-45 service alittle over two months ago and have shoot around 2000 rounds with no problems. Ive used WWB , FIOCCHI , REMINGTON , and AMERICAN EAGLE all 230gr all worked fine. I added a STREAMLIGHT TLR-1 because it is my nightstand gun. Next I want to get a trigger job done and some night sights. Nothing but good things to say about the gun and its at a great price.

The general perception is that it's an outstanding gun. My perception is that it's over rated. It's a decent gun, but IMO there are much better guns out there.

Like what, Josh? As far as I'm concerned you can't do much better than reliably shoots, is accurate, and simple to care for. XD's are all that and a bag of chips.

Pretty impressive pistol. I like my 4" Service very much.

Is it "perfect"? I know of no handgun that is. But this one comes closer than almost anything else I've experienced.

The manual of arms is quite simple. It doesn't require a trigger pull to initiate disassembly. The cocked and loaded chamber indicators are nice, as is the grip safety when holstering (especially in an IWB holster).

Accuracy is acceptable, even good, at distances under 15-yards. Mine tends to shoot a bit high at 25-yards because the sights are regulated for a six-o'clock hold on a bullseye and I am used to direct sight alignment.

The extractor is internal and has good side tension on a chambered round. A loaded round can be held against the bolt face with the slide removed. This is good for reliable extraction and ejection.

I think the magazines are pretty high quality and are drop-free. It's much easier to load the 13th round than most other pistols require on their last round.

I wish that the pistol came with a third mag and not "The Gear" crap holster. The spare magazine carrier, while not excellent, is okay. But if you don't buy another mag the double carrier is a bit useless.

The warranty is Lifetime, even for someone who is not the original purchaser. But be warned, if something breaks you will be asked to send the pistol in to Springfield Armory for repair as they do not sell parts. Alternative aftermarket parts have not yet been observed, although that may someday occur since this is becoming a very popular pistol. Personalizing/customizing is not an option at this time with the exception of different sights. And they are a real bugger to press in and out.

I have no regrets owning mine.

i love mine. since i got it a few months ago ive shot it more than my other guns. i guess im going to have to start shooting my other ones..i think they are getting jealous :D

To me any decent gun is reliable, fairly accurate, and simple. The XD is certainly those things, but that's about all. For a gun to be outstanding IMO it has to have a certain level of fit and finish that the XD lacks. It doesn't hurt if it looks halfway decent either, but that's a personal matter. There are other things I don't like about the XD also, such as the insanely high bore axis, the way too long grip, the needless grip safety, and the width. Other peoples opinions may vary, but in my opinion its just decent, nowhere near outstanding.

I have the XD45 4" service pistol, it is just great, and in my opinion is the best bang for the buck out there (pardon the pun)

Sure there are better pistols out there, just not in that price range

It just feels so good in my hand, and with 13+1 capacity it is all I think I will need.

Sounds like a G21 lover is envious:neener: . The .45XD is getting a good reputation for reliability and durability and is fairly accurate. A lot of 14rd gun for $500.

Nope don't own a G21, or any other Glock for that matter, although I've had two of them, they went the same way my XD45 did. Traded for something I liked better.

I refuse to buy one.

Mostly cause I can't afford it, and I'm waiting for them to bring out conversion kits:D

I'm also looking at the XD 45 ACP, but I have small hands. Does anyone know how the pistol fits people with small/medium hands? Also, is it compact enough to make a good concealed carry gun?

To rephrase what my friend nitesite said: "Its a very impressive pistol".
I own the 4" service model with a Streamlight TLR-1 attached, and this combo
gives added weight too the muzzle end; aiding in taming recoil. I ran it side
by side against my brand new $1500 Les Baer Thunder Ranch; and was just
as equally impressed. They took the best of the SIG-PRO, Glock, and H&K
and rolled 'em into this very fine pistol. Currently, I am using mine as my
home D' handgun. I guess you could say its my second line of defense;
right behind my Remington 12 gague 870 Marine Magnum stoked with #4
Buckshot~!:uhoh:  ;)

I've got the 5'' Tactical model. It was an impulse purchase on the way home from work one day, but now it's become one of those pistols that tags along on every range trip.

I have medium-small hands and have been really impressed with how comfortable this pistol is to grip. With winter coming on, I'll likely rotate it into carry after I get a chance to test a couple brands of HP's in it. I haven't tried the holster that came with it yet, but I did pick up a Blackhawk Serpa to use at the range and in IDPA. I went with the Blackhawk to keep the holster design consistent with my other competition holsters. Based on the dozen or so hours I've carried this pistol by my side, I'd say it's certainly possible to conceal it. It's no PM9, but for 14 rounds of .45 in a platform that's accurate and reliable, it's worth the extra trouble of a cover garment.

Another possibility would be a shoulder holster, but the 4'' model would be better suited for that.

I have the XD 45 also and have to say it is one very fine gun. I have a TLR2 hung on the front and it makes it great to hold. I have big hands and it fits me just the way it should.

Not taking anything away from my 2 Colts or Para, but the XD is my favortie shooter.**

** Just picked up a new M&P today so after I go the the range, that is subject to change :)

I absolutely love mine. (4-inch Service Model) I've put a little over 2k through it so far and other then LSWC's it feeds everything wonderfully. The accuracy is outstanding and I can't say anything bad about it. I was actually surprised when putting it side by side with a Glock 30 that it's not that much bigger. The grip is longer an the slide is maybe 1/4 inch longer .. . .always thought it was a bigger pistol.

As far as small/medium hands . .my 22 year old daughter who's 5'3" and has proportionate hands can shoot it very well. So well that I'm having to practice between our friday range sessions as she's getting close to beating me. :)

Have a good one,
Dave

Is this something that is unique to Springfield or do other manufacturers have the same policy? Not that I am in a position to repair my own gun, since I don't even have a handgun yet (waiting until I take the basic firearms class in November), but I am wondering if it is something to be concerned about.

well its good that they will fix it for free, its bad that its gonna cost $50 to ship it to them to fix it. I think you have to ship handguns overnight for some reason and its expensive, but a gunsmith was gonna charge you $50 to fix it anyway, so i guess your even?

I own a .45 Service and have been very pleased with it. I haven't fired many other guns to say that the XD is the best, but from my experience and everything I've read, I think it's a hell of a gun, especially for the money.

It doesn't require a trigger pull to initiate disassembly.
Yes you do, well maybe not to initiate disassembly, but to get the slide off you do. You lock the slide back, turn the disassebly lever, release the slide, pull the trigger, and pull the slide forward to remove it from the gun. There was a thread on the XD Talk forum where a guy didn't check that there was a loaded mag in a XD subcompact, and he had his hand covering a portion of the barrel during disassembly. Fortunately no one else was hurt, but that was one ugly wound.

They refund up to $50 for shipping on any warranty work. I've had two of the 9mm V-10s break on me (don't buy those, trust me, .40 is ok, but not 9mm). They reimbursed me for shipping on the first one, and I'm expecting the second one to come any day now. Also with certain problems, they replace the gun. This means that both times I sent them my gun, they sent me a brand new gun with the full kit, so I've gotten an extra four magazines. When replacement is required, they'll replace it with a different model within reason. Some people have gone from a 9mm to .45 on the replacement. You could probably get a 1911 from them if the price was comparable.

I have smallish hands, and the grip on the XD .45 is very comfortable for me. My hands are small enough that they fit well on a HK P2000SK comfortably. I think for 13 rounds they've done a hell of a job on the grip.
