SpringField XD 45 Compact MOD 2 700 Round Update

As I said in my original posting here http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=778965 I bought this Mod 2 in search of my Goldilocks .45 and I am happy to say so far so good. This little Mod 2 has lived up to all my expectations and more.

I just wanted to give a quick update. I have run somewhere around 700 rounds through it ball and HP of various types and it continues to impress.

It is dead nuts accurate. Put the front sight over top of what you want to hit, press, rinse, repeat. The gun is very very controllable, comfortable and as I said very accurate. The trigger on mine is very good.

Reliability has been 99% with three failures in those 700 rounds. The failures in question came from the cheapest, steel cased box of Monarch (Academy Sports Russian stuff) I could fine. The failures are as follows.

1-Failure to feed. A quick tap, rack and the round fed and fired just fine.

2-Failure to fire. Good solid primer hit. Re-chambered several times could not get round to ignite. Dud round.

3-Failure to fire. Same as above. Good solid primer hit. Re-chambered several times could not get round to ignite. Dud round.

All three of the above failures came from the same box. So I am going to chalk those up to suspect ammo, especially the failures to fire.

I have been shooting and carrying this gun a lot. It carries wonderfully. Just like a chunky Glock 26. Honestly if I carry a fully loaded 13 round backup magazine I notice that more then I do the gun.

I have carried it OWB, IWB, tucked etc. and it just plain works and hides very easily. (Golf shirts, Loose T-Shirts, button downs etc. A good belt is a must as .45 ammo itself adds a fair bit of weight.

All in I am happier and more impressed with this purchase then I have been in a long time and I have a great many very good guns, this one just happened to scratch and itch I have had for a long time.

I just bought the same firearm a couple of weeks ago. I've been traveling so haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but will hit the range this week.

One final report. I have put a couple hundred more hollow points through it and thought I had a problem.

It started with two failures to feed with Federal 230 grain +P HST. I figured it might just not like that ammo. A quick tap rack would feed the round and I would be back in business, but I figured maybe the short slide didn't like the +P velocity or possibly the gun just didn't like the hollow point cavity. At any rant I figured I would give another brand a go.

Fast forward to today and I was running Speer Gold Dots 230 grain. I had one failure to feed and again a quick tap, rack fed the round. I immediately began to suspect the gun was going to be finnicky with higher end defensive ammo and was getting a little bummed.

Now let me preface this next part by saying I am the first person to tell folks to look for the easy answer. Is the power button on, is it plugged in, did you check the fuse etc. before looking for some hugely technical failure point. So of course I did NONE OF THAT and figured the feed ramp had an issue or something was out of spec etc...........................

.......and wait for it......that's when I realized suddenly what was happening and I went back to the HST+P to test my theory. Yep I was a dumbass and my off hand thumb was tapping the slide lock under heavier recoil, effectively locking the slide back. Hence a tap/rack would simply release the slide lock and load the round.

As soon as I realized this I adjusted to a lower thumb position and Voila 50 rounds of HST +P with no issues. A bunch of Speer Gold Dot, no issues.

So at the end of around 900 rounds or so the tally is as follows.

2 failures to ignite the primer. Monarch Steel case bottom of the barrel stuff. Nothing would ignite them so I am going to say bad rounds.

4 "failures to feed" - These failures eventually tracked to a PEBKAC or ID10T error. since everything was functioning exactly as it should. When you apply the slide lock the slide should..........well lock. Once I had changed grip all failures went away.

So all in all I have to say I love this little thing. It's a great shooter, very, very concealable and seems to feed damn near everything barring user error.

So the moral of the story is ALWAYS LOOK for the easiest answer first and just because you have shot for so long you helped test out the original Winchester 92 doesn't mean you won't occasionally hang a slide or gun up due to your technique............errrr or lack of technique.

I don't own any S-A pistols but was looking into the XD mod 2 in maybe .40S&W. It has a lot of great features for carry or home security. Not a fan of the fiber optic front sight but I dig the cool surface textures on the XD mod 2's frame.

My last purchase was a XDS in .45 and although I am happy with it I'd really like a Mod 2 also in .45. When I get the $$$ I will own one!
