As I mentioned in another thread, I am going to be picking up a new carry pistol in the next few weeks.

So far I have considered 1911s ( which I like), Glocks, Kahrs (don't fit my hand), HKs (I dream of the P7M8), CZs, Baby Eagles, Ruger Sp101s, Steyr M9 and the XD series.

I checked out another XD today, price was good, fits my hand well, I like the trigger and the safety designs and the sights.

My only real concern was the width. I carry IWB under tucked in shirts. Right now I carry a Bersa Thunder .380 in a shirttucker. Is the XD too thick for tucked in carry?

Also, I checked out the subcompact XD, which actually fit my hand. I was amazed at that, since most small pistols don't fit my hand well, like the Glock 26.

Right now I am still conflicted between the XD and a Milspec 1911, but I am starting to lean towards the XD for reliablity concerns, and for the lower price of 9mm ammo, so I can practice more.

Thanks.

I don't want to hijack your thread here, but i'm interested too. When i get my permit, i'm likely to carry my bersa thunder as it is the only suitable gun i have. I'd carry IWB. I was thinking of possibly something slightly bigger for carrying in "the bad parts of town." Something in 9mm (doesn't need to be any bigger) that holds 12 shots or so (pre ban mags or hopefully post-postban mags) XD compact looks nice, what else is there?

Well, either a 1911 or an XD would be a good choice. I have an XD in .40, and plan on a 1911 soon.

XD is great. I think it's fine for tucked carry, but that depends on your rig. Now, as to its suitability for carry, it's just peachy.

BUT:

I won't carry it. I don't like the idea of not being able to "lock it"

Now, I know some say safety is between the ears, yada, yada, but I simply don't feel comfortable carrying it with a round in the chamber. Hence, I'm getting a 1911.

It's just me. your opinions may vary.

As for reliability, the XD is top notch. I've fed thousands of rounds through it with no problems, and it even loves the cheap reloads i feed it.

I imagine that the 9 would be that way also, because I hear that in general 9mm is more reliable because of the shape of the bullet.

Anyways, should you get it, you'll be very pleased.

I used an HS2000 (XD before bought by Springfield) in a BladeTech Ultimate Concealment holster carried IWB as my first carry gun. I was quite happy with it.

I carry both a xd-9 and a xd-9 subcompact iwb in fist holsters. I just started carrying the full size this week, and I was carrying the compact the last few months. the full size is actually a little more comfortable width wise, but has the longer grip to compensate for that. I find both to be extremely awsome carry guns, and am sending them off for express sights after christmas.

My fiance carries an XD-40, but until now she hasn't had a decent holster for it. (Shhhh it's one of her Christmas presents) I will let you know what she thinks after Christmas.

...but I simply don't feel comfortable carrying it with a round in the chamber. Hence, I'm getting a 1911.
Just curious, but how do you plan on carrying your 1911? Or did you mean that you would feel better being able to lock it?

Clubsoda22: Im not sure, I haven't measured it yet, but too the naked eye, and the comfort level in my iwb, it does seem to be a shade wider than the fullsize. Not much, at most a 1/8 of an inch, but enough that I am noticing somethign different. The fullsize has been more comfortable to carry with a untucked t-shirt due to the weight being spread over more area, but the subcompact has less barrel and grip. I need to sit down and measure both, because Im using the exact same type of holster for both, and Ive been carrying the full size all week, and Im liking it more for some reason.

I've got a baby eagle .45 and it is the worst gun on the planet. Jams pretty much on every round, wouldn't recommend it.

I would like to ad that the 1911 safety can quite easily be knocked off while carrying concealed. It is very unsettling to find your gun off safe at the end of the day. But guess what? The grip safety still kept it from firing! The same with the XD. I have a full size and the sub compact. They are very good pistols. If you are concerned with chamber loaded carry; just carry one around cocked with chamber empty for a week or two. After you see that the firing pin is still cocked at the end of the day, and at the end of the week or two, you will feel more comfortable with it. It would be virtually impossible for the XD to fire "all by itself". You have the trigger safety, the grip safety, plus the striker safety. The pistol must be in your hand, and the trigger must be pulled fully to the rear to depress the striker safety. Hell, you can't get much safer than this one!

If that is true for you then you are doing something terribly wrong. I carry a 1911 almost every day and I have NEVER had the safety come off unintentionally. I can even say that all my friends who carry a 1911 have never had a problem with the safety coming off.

Right now I alternate carry between the xd full size and his baby brother the compact. I order a summer special holster for my 1911, which should be ready in february. To be honest, I personally have no concerns about carrying either gun, yes the xd doesnt lock, yes the 1911 has a cocked hammer. I consider the safety between my ears to be the most important, and I like the triggers on both the xds and the 1911 series. But, if you have a concern on carrying one or the other, pick the one your most comfortable with. If it makes you nervous to carry a particular pistol, you probally wont carry it when you need it most, which defeats the whole purpose of carrying in the first place.

I can tell you that according to Springfield, the grip width of the XD-9 Subcompact is 1.2 inches.

Digme: Where did you find the dimensions for the width? I was looking all over the web site and could only find overall length and weight measurements.

Some points:

1. Not unless your thumb safety is defective.
2. The grip safety didn't keep it from firing. Not pulling the trigger kept it from firing.

Sapper,

Watch the XD sub video that pops up when you go that page.

My XD9 (4") goes everywhere with me. It feels great and is just big enough that it 'reminds' me that it is there. I love it.

Get one! You wont regret it, even if you dont carry it

Well everyone, I did end up purchasing the XD subcompact, which so far seems to be a pretty good choice.

I posted a range report the other day from my first outing with it.

I like the way the safety features all work together, seems like a good design. I was never really concerned with any of the features or accuracy or anything else like that, I knew that it was well built and accurate.

The only concern I had was that it looked too thick to comfortably carry, but now that I have it, I think it won't be much of a problem.

Thanks Digme, I see the dimensions for the xd compact, but none for the full size. I guess Ill break down this weekend and actually measure them, and do a comparision. Ive carrying the full size for almost two weeks now, and except for riding in a car, never notice Im carrying a larger pistol now.
