This question is specific to the Springfield XD... If you feel the need to throw in the halfwitted response of "buy a glock", don't bother to reply.

I'm curious as to what, if any, PD or law enforcement agencies issue Springfield XDs, and in what caliber.

Thanks in advance!

I know that some PD in Ohio started issuing the Smith and Wesson M&P. It was the first department I believe. I think it may have been Columbus or Cleveland.

I think that Ala Dan is correct. Since Springfield is being stingy with the parts it would be hard to fix an officers firearm if it goes down. I think that Springfield should start acting more like Glock if they want to start moving in on the LE market.

Perhaps the biggest problem is that Springfield doesn't actually build the pistols themselves so they don't have sufficient control over spares production and supply?

As Ala Dan pointed out, LEO's won't touch the XD because SA won't make certain parts available and because SA doesn't offer an armorers course on the XD. SA has been promising an armorer's course for some time, but has yet to show anything. It looks like SA has decided that Glock has such a tight grip on the law enforcement market, they're not even going to make an effort to get into it.

Is there any other pistol that has that cocking indicator sticking out the back like the XD? If not, then I know I saw at least one police officer in Las Cruces, New Mexico carrying an XD. I was just passing through, though and I don't know anything about their policy on issue weapons or allowing officers to carry their own.

Many departments will allow officers to use their own weapon as long as it meets their regs and the officer qualifies with it. The officer is of course responsible with the weapon's up keep. Smaller depts with thin budgets often don't have the money to issue sidearms and require officers to supply their own weapon, again within dept. regs. Also, many departments also have volunteer reserve or auxillary officers & deputies who pay for much of their own equipment including their sidearm.

Walther P99 (AKA the abortion SW99).

I heard (from a Glock rep no less!) that supposedly some departments had tried them out but didn't like the backstrap safety because if they needed to fire before they had a firm grip on the thing it wouldn't and also because you can't operate the slide without it depressed.

Smith & Wesson lets you buy parts. I Called once inquiring about a Walther P22 hammer spring and they said you can buy the entire hammer group or whatever other parts you want. The guy even offered to go out into the shop and scrap up some extras for me and mail them to me for free, I declined though because the spring hasn't broke [yet].

the county sheriff depts around here switched to xds from glocks. i was talking to the county sheriff one day. he said one of his deputies didnt want to lose his glock. but after shooting the xd. he started liking it more then the glock.

im not sure what caliber they are using though.

Walther P99
Thanks. I did a web search, and if all P99s have a red striker indicator in a recessed area like the one I just saw online, than that officer I saw was definately NOT carrying a Walther. The one I saw looked identical to my XD's. It caught my eye briefly while I was walking out of a store directly behind the officer. However, he turned left before I could get a good look at the grip (it was on his right hip), and I turned right walking out of the store. I assumed (and still do) that he was carrying an XD.

Not sure how many agencies issue but I know of a couple in the pacific northwest, I believe there is one in Arizona, and there are a couple in Florida. I think you are going to start seeing them more and more.......
