Today I was dropping off a J-frame that I’d finished an action job on at my LGS when I saw a Springfield XD sub-compact in the display case. The price tag said $340, so I checked it out.
It was part of the “Defender” series, a 3” barrel 9mm with a 13 round double-stack mag. I like XDs and have 4 already. My EDC pistol has been an XDs .45 and, after installing a PRP trigger kit, it’s been just fine, but I’ve been thinking about the wisdom of packing a gun that holds only 7 rounds, plus I had some extra $$ from the wheelgun work I’ve done lately.
The gun in the showcase had a truly horrible trigger. Jeff Cooper once described a trigger as feeling like the last turn of the key opening an old-fashioned sardine can and this one was about that bad, except it had more creep! I had the clerk bring out three more and one of them had a really nice trigger; smooth, clean break, etc. That’s the one I bought.
Being retired military, I got 10% off, so with tax it came to a little under $325.
The “Defender” series guns come with just one magazine, but the 16 round mags for my 5” XD Tactical will work for reloads. The gun and one spare mag gives me 30 rounds on hand. I haven’t had a chance to try it out, but all my other XDs have been totally reliable and plenty accurate.
