Ok I just have to ask. Why does the Springfield XD come with a half holster (ok it's a free holster that IS nice) that has a rail on it? Does anyone actually use it? How have you used it and what were the results? Pics?

What about the dual mag holster with a rail on each magazine?

I just went and put a compact XD 9mm on hold for myself and was just staggered by the free stuff... and confused by it as well

...and before anyone says 'you shoulda bought a...' I spent hours trying out other lines, Glocks (17, 19, and a 26) just don't fit my hands - the finger grooves sit in the middle of my fingers, the M&P I needed the large grip panel and it still felt a bit off, but the XD just fit, so as they say, buy what works.

I'm just not sure about having 4 rails on me at once! :D

I bought an XD-40 recently and while I think the holster would be fine for open carry I just got a Don Hume opentop holster to use for concealed carry-I don't plan on using a carrier at this time but if I were I don't think I would want to one that had the magazines facing opposite directions in a high stress situation. Read a Thread about this recently at XDTalk Forums. You might be able to get more info about accessories there. My holster came from Pistolgear.com-They have a lot of things available to accessorize or modify an XD You might want to check it out

I dont use either the holster or the mag holder. I'd rather use a quality holster instead of the belt kydex provided.

The XD-9 is a fine weapon. My son has one. I opted for the XD-45 instead.

Oh believe me, I don't plan on using the holster unless I'm at a shoot where I can just casually draw from open carry.... my question is more about the rail they put on top... I just don't get it! Would you slap a big old scope on there? if so, what about the rails on the mag holster! Has anyone seen a use for those rails? Maybe I'm missing something here...

You can put the speed loader that comes with the 'gear' on one of these rails if you want to keep it with you & handy. Or any other accessory that fits the rail on the pistol. Not saying I'd want to but you can.

One use could be if you are carrying concealed, most of the time a weapon light will not fit on the gun in a concealable holster, so you can then stick the light on the mag holder.....or the light on the holster as far as that goes.....that way you can have your gun holstered, and still have a weapon light "handy".

Do I use it for such....not really.....my gun stays in my bed side drawer with the light attached. When I take it out, I usually have a messenger bag and I stick it in the bag, in the provided holster....which servers to cover the trigger just to be safe. I have occasionally stuck the light to it, to have it with me, but usually the light stays in the drawer back at home.

I have two XD45's so I have two of everything. Later on I requested the XD gear paddle holster for lefties.

I like the mag holders. They work fine for me.
I covered the paddle with moleskin and use it for CCW.

Since I am a lefty the free holsters (I'm on my 3rd XD) stay in the box. I end up buying a Matrix 7 for lefties. I don't keep an extra mag on my belt.

i don't use mine, i do use the mag holder as a back up at trainning and while at the range, it does fit close to the body and has plenty of room for adjustment.

I have the XD 9 ported, its my main carry gun. I can't even remember where i put that holster that came with the gun. Its only used when i'm out in the mountains hunting and the XD is there in case of a cougar.

I use the holster and mag holder at the outdoor range when practicing it also fits my Witness pistols pretty well I've got the XD45 4". I use the rails to attach the mag loader to the front of the holster so it's handy and won't get lost. I use an IWB from crossbreed for ccw and sometimes one from UBG.

If you have a real gunbelt it works fine, in a utilitarian sort of fashion. On a regular belt it is pretty much useless.

I don't think all those rails are for separate items, just different spots where you can choose hang stuff.;)

Lefty +1 . ..but I do use the mag holder. I"d have used the holster for time at the range if it was lefty friendly.

Have a good one,
Dave

Well, I got my XD9 home and started fiddling with the rails on the holster and the mag holster. So far I can only see putting the mag loader on the mag holster... and MAYBE putting a light on the half holster if I plan to use it at all, something with a quick release on it so I can swap it on/off of the XD before holstering... lousy SD setup so it probably won't get used much if at all.

Just weird... I mean if the mag holster was a roto-tilt I could see putting my G2 Surefire light on the holster and using it as a hands-free light source, er no that would be a 'shirt on fire' situation... oh I give up. Just to many rails.

I'm not a lefty but from what I understand Springfield will exchange the RH holster for a LH one free of charge if you call them.

With that said, I don't use the holster but I do use the mag carrier for IDPA on occasion.

I have 3 XD's so I've got a ton of these things floating around.

I primarily use the XD Gear paddle holster for IDPA and then IWB or OWB leather for concealed carry.

I have found that the XD gear, having only one attachment point to the belt, leaves too much of the butt sticking out and creates a lump under my shirt. I need the butt of the grip pulled into my body more.

I used mine for IDPA for a while, until I got a Blackhawk. I still use the 45 mag holder, on the rare occasion I decide to compete with that XD.
