The company that I work for has decided to issue 9mm Springfield XDs after the first of the year. We had one at the range during our last training cycle but we didn't have time really check it out (shot one mag out of it). Anyone here have one? What is the general opinion of the gun (not the caliber) Understand that I have no say in what I carry, I am trying to decide if I want to purchase one for off-duty practice. Thanks and GBA

The XD is a good pistol. They are always compared to the Glock but in reality they are not even close to being the same design.

The Springfield XD is a single action pistol with a grip safety that blocks the sear and a firing pin lock.

They are accurate and very reliable.

Their single action design makes for a good trigger.

Most everyone that owns these pistols really like them but I just can't see them getting any major police contracts.

I don't think many PD's would let their people carry a single action pistol without a manaul safety when they tend to have so many AD's with DAO pistols.

Someone in your company has made a very good decision. Good move.

The XD series is tough, reliable, accurate, not expensive, and is covered with a good warranty that will save your company some money down the road.

Springfield has stated that they have the XD in the 45 Auto in design stages now.

That's when I'd be interested in this auto.

I do love the price.

The XD's I have had opportunity to shoot have been nice guns. They seem quite durable, are reliable & accurate to boot.

I've had an XD9 for better than 2 years. It has been 100% reliable with over 1200 rounds through it. Shoots everything I feed it. Is as accurate as I am. I personaly like it a lot better than the Glocks I have shot. The grip angle is more like my 1911A1 and I like the grip safety setup. Trigger pull is l o n g, though. I WILL be buying another when they come out in 45ACP. I have tried the XD Subcompact but it was too small for me, just didn't seem to fit me right.
Your milage may vary....

So, uh, is the grip safety not a manual safety? Do you not have to disengage it with your hand?

edited to add: 'disengage' isn't a real word, is it? :uhoh:

The grip safety does not stop someone from pulling the trigger when the pistol is in their hand.

That is the most common ND that cops have these days.

They can't keep their finger off the trigger and they tend to shoot themselves in the ???.

How does a grip safety prevent this kind of accident?

The lighter single action trigger on the XD would make this problem worse.

Well, whatever happened to relying on GOOD training, rather than silly safety devices

The XD is a great pistol, and I would have no qualms carrying it, because I can keep my damn finger off the trigger.

As far as MY pistol goes, it's eaten everything i've put through it EXCEPT speer lawman, and I looked at the bullet, and it's a little different shape. It fed, just not as reliably or smoothly as the other stuff (WWB, cheap reloads, various hollowpoints, etc.)

Mine's a .40

Anyways, you'll like it. I love mine. It's no beauty like a 1911 but it's a reliable, functional, combat pistol that will give you lots of good service.

Every time I take my XD Sub-9 to the range, I am blown away at the accuracy and consistency of the little shooter. :D

While it is considered "single action" the trigger is not too light; it does take a conscious effort to press the trigger, but it is consistent. It is considered single action due to the fact that when a round is chambered, the action (striker) is fully cocked. Between the trigger blade safety, the grip safety and the firing pin block, as well as the tactile chamber loaded indicator and the cocking indicator pin, it is, dare I say, a safe gun.

I consider the safety system one which enables me to carry holstered in a safe condition, but the safeties disengage as soon as I grip the gun and press the trigger.

Of course ANY firearm is only as good (or as dangerous) as the user, and this fact should NEVER be taken lightly.

Thanks for the replies, sounds like I'm in the market for a new handgun. The current issue is the S&W 4043 and when purchased the Factory rep. offered the individual officers a pretty good deal so I have two. Will try and trade one for a XD9 if we do not get a similar deal offered from Springfield.;) Thanks again and GBA

If god himself would choose a sidearm, it would be the XD.

I rest my life on this pistol everyday. And have never had one problem at all besides affording more ammo to put in it. Good Times..... you'll love the XD.

My next pistol will be a XD Subcompact. I still haven't decided whether to go for the 9mm or the .40

Most likely the .40 since I already have a 9mm and I want to broaden my pistol collection calibers.

Any advantage of one round over the other? stock both carry 10 rds, but I've heard rumors that the .40 magazines can carry two more 9mm round in the XD-9. Would that also apply for the subcompacts?

Oh yeah, anyone wanna post pics of their subcompacts? I love pictures

It is illegal to use 40 mags in your XD-9.

I know you read the BATF letter, but what that letter does not say is that it is not legal to load more than 10 rounds into a post ban mag for use in a post ban pistol. don't do it, modify pre-ban beretta or sig mags instead.

The grip safety does not stop someone from pulling the trigger when the pistol is in their hand.

Isn't it a safe assumption that if you are gripping the pistol, and squeeze the trigger that a discharge is your intent ?

9mm ammo in a 40 mag is legal. Here's the letter:

DanS: No modifications need to be made to the XD40 magazine to make it work in the XD9. Also it will still work in the XD40. As such it is NOT ILLEGAL as per BATF rules. It is the modifications that make it illegal.

Am running abit of a torture test on mine. Its had over 1k of the cheapest non-wolf ammo I could find without degradation of accuracy or reliability.

But one thing everyone has managed to forget to mention so far....

Its waay too fun to double tap with it.
