Springfield XD ???s

The gun does have an unusually large trigger reset (forward travel) between shots. If you're going to be using this on duty make sure to get accustomed to that. This hasn't been a problem for me personally but I have witnessed another get hungup on it. Strange situation. It didn't occur to him that letting go of the trigger would allow the gun fire again. Squeezing harder doesn't make it work. :D :D :D

The grip safety does more than prevent trigger travel. As long as it is not depressed the slide remains locked fully forward. This allows the gun to be pushed into a tight holster without disconnect or partial extraction occurring. I'm finding that useful for easier holstering.

The XD is much safer than a Glock....you have to depress the grip safety and pull the trigger to fire a round...it has to be a deliberate act on the holders part. I have an XD in 357sig and I love it, its my daily carry gun now(CCW). Very accurate and dependable. As far as PDs and government agencies not using the gun its only because its a new weapon, within a few years they will start showing up in those up agencies. XDs are great pistols with a decent price to boot.

I do not own one, yet, but I know people who do. The biggest complaint I hear about them is that the tend to rust easy. At least much easier than a Glock would. The people here who own one could tell you better if it is a problem or not.

Rusting...
This isn't a matter of the gun's quality, but a matter of hygiene. How you take care of your gun.

I've had SIG's and HKs rust on me out in Virginia.

I guess to clarify a little bit let me add that the guys I know that own the XD also own Glocks. They say the finish on the XD is not as good as the finish on thier Glocks and the XD needs more TLC to keep rust from forming. Like I said I do not own a XD so I am going on what I am told.

Good choice on the XD! You're department will not regret it.

To clear up a few things....

- Although the inner workings are a bit different, the XD is identical to the Glock in real-world operational terms.

- The grip safety is a "disconnect" type safety. It does not block the trigger, rather it functionally disconnects the trigger from the sear block.

- The grip angle on the XD is different from the Glock, so makes for a different "fit" than the Glock. The XD also seems better suited to smaller hands, or big hands with short fingers (like mine).

- The finish on the XD is not as durable as that on a Glock (which is just about as tough as you can get). You WILL need to regularly clean and inspect the weapon for wear, as well as use a good quality protectant as part of your cleaning regimen.

- There are several XD owners (myself included) that have put over 10,000 rounds through their guns with very satisfactory results.

- You CAN legally use XD40 mags in the XD 9 without modification, although you may have to massage the feed lips a bit to make the last round feed properly. Stick with your department's policy to avoid any liability pitfalls for the department.

- DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, put a round in the chamber and then drop the slide on it. The one-piece extractor is not designed to distend to this degree, and will quickly loose tension resulting in the dreaded Failure To Extract. Trust me, I figured it out the hard way. Always strip a round from the magazine in order to load the gun (which is the proper way to do it, anyway).

- Keep an eye on the front edge of the rail block. Unless you switch to a heavier recoile spring, a steady diet of +p rated ammo will quickly chip away the front of the block. Standard ammo does not seem to cause any trouble (at least not for me).

The XD is an excellent firearm, expecially given the extremely modest price. Count yourself lucky that your department decided to go this route.

you can if you shop around, some people figured the HS2000 wasn't up to spec compared to the springfield and have let them go for super cheap. heck, i got my NIB 1st gen. hs2000 for 165$.

cornbread &eatatjoe's: I bought my XD9 when Springfield first started to sell them with their name on them. In fact, it was the first one I had ever seen. It came highly recomended from an owner of an HS-2000. I only paid $275 + tax, and the shop threw in 3 boxes of PMC 9MM to go with it! Don't know why it was so cheap, the gun was new in the box, but I jumped right on it. In fact, I was filling out a 4473 for a CZ-83 when I asked the dealer if he had an XD. When he brought it out, told me the price, I tore up the 4473 and told him to put the CZ back in the case. Haven't regretted it yet. It has been a great pistol! I do feel kinda guilty about the price though, I know someone in the shop made a big mistake on that. Though I have bought 3 more guns there since I bought the XD. In fact I am going there tomorrow to pick up an FN-SA49 from SOG. Merry Xmas to me!!!

Though you may already have your answer, just another testimony:

I've got the .40 cal. 5" slide "tactical" version. It ate 2300 rounds before I had a failure to feed. However, said FTF was due to being fired/soiled heavily and then not cleaned for nearly two weeks. I have no doubt that had I taken better care of it, it would have eaten 2300 more! Accuracy was great, and the kick is straight back into your forearm, rather than up, allowing even a novice to punch the center at 10 yards occasionally.

It's a great piece, but I found out at the range (through inroducing a newb to the sport) that you can also pull the trigger first and then activate the grip safety. A friend had smaller hands but insisted on trying it. After aligning the sights with the target she pulled the trigger. Sensing something was amiss, she adjusted her grip. Much to her surprise, it then went off. Of course, this is all corrected with basic training and following the safety rules. (I should say that no one was hurt, and she still had a good time!).

Other than that, its just plain sweet. However, get one with night sights if you can. I'm about to upgrade mine (not available when I originally bought it). Anybody got a good night sight recommendation for Sig/XD (same sights)? I'd prefer naturally radiant over charge-and-glow...

Barns - I had SA install night sights when I sent my XD sub-9 for a failure to extract problem (it needed to have the chamber polished). I didn't specify which sights (am unsure if there is a choice).

They installed XS Big Dot tritium night sights which took almost no getting used to in full light. The one down-side, if you consider this a downside, is that it's a post and dot sight and the front tritium sight dot is centered in the much bigger white dot. In low light, if you try to align the glowing dot to the top of the glowing post, you end up hitting low.

It takes some training, but now that I'm used to it, it is as accurate as the stock 3-dot sights; I like them now. If you want consistency without retraining, you may want to find 3-dot sights.

I have a XD40 and I like it better than my Glocks.
For me it fits my hand better. I think that the ergonomics are better than Glock. It is also cheaper than Glock. Other than those two points it is pretty much a toss up in my opinion. Other than my Kahr PM9 this is easily my favorite polymer DAO gun.

i've been a die-hard Glock fan. i've put off getting a XD since they came out (as a SA) i bought a LNIB XD-40 Tactical for $300 and haven't regreted it. i also got a XD9 sub w/XML for a great price. the XD9 sub fit's me better than my G27 did. you can work the trigger for less take-up and shorter reset as well as the over-travel. i have mine down to about 3#.

Nice to see a thread on the XD..things had kinda toned down on this pistol for a while.. how's it doing?

It is probably a gun that I would never buy since I do not like its feel but it is a good shooter.. that slide rust thing is real, a fellow clubber who has one went back to his G17 for personal carry as the frequency of slide maintenance required for the XD got to him. He is thinking of having the slide hard chromed though as he really likes the gun.

Ive been carrying the xd subcompact for 3 months now, and the xd fullsize for 48 hours now, and Ive had no sign of any rust on the guns. Im definitly not the most liberal cleaner and lubricator of my firearms, and Ive had no issues at all. In addition to carrying the guns, Ive own the fullsize for 16 months, and the compact size for 8 months, and once again, no rust on the slide. Maybe I just go Lucky, or the slide rust thing is not as bad as people are saying. By the way, i live in northern virginia, and my room is in a damp basement, so moisture is definitly a problem for me.
