springfield XDS

I picked up a brand new XDs 45 last weekend. Yesterday was its first range day.

I put 120 rounds of my standard 230 grain FMJs, over 5.6 grains of W231. Absolutely no malfunctions whatsoever. No problems - not one. I was quite impressed and consider that to be pretty uncommon for any new pistol, especially a sub-compact with a 3.3" barrel. I will start trying some other cartridges now, to see how it handles different bullet shapes.... but I'll stick to something like a Gold Dot with the same basic profile. Reliability is everything.

The trigger is not great - long pull and not light, but at least it is relatively smooth. I was able to hold a fairly decent group - softball-sized - at 30 feet, offhand with a Weaver stance. I think this is going to be a good carry pistol.

Another criticism I have is the sights... although the front one is one of those fiber optic things, it obviously needs light to work. In a fairly dark indoor range there isn't enough light to help. The sights may as well be black. If I really wanted to make the pistol better, I'd put some tritium sights on it or some white dots, but I don't think it's really worth doing. If I have to use the pistol its probably not going to be at any great distance. I will probably leave it totally stock as it came from the factory.

I was also surprised at the plastic/kydex(?) holster that comes in the box with it. It actually works pretty well! I'll probably drop the pistol in a coat pocket rather than using that paddle holster, but if I do elect to use it, it will work just fine.

So, the bottom line here is, spend the time to get your XDs working correctly if it's not. Once you do, you'll find it pretty easy to handle. It's not nearly as brutal with the recoil as I thought it was going to be. Totally manageable, even with the short 5-round magazines and your pinkie hanging off the bottom.

Good luck, guys.

My experience was to run out all my neighbor's .45 ACP he had in his basement which was between 30 & 60 years old, which he did not want to shoot. Never a problem for the G36s.

RainDodger,
I am also curious if this new XDS45 purchase was manufactured pre or post recall. I wonder if there is a way to find out when a serial # was manufactured?

I had an early production run from summer 2012 I bought in fall of 2012 and I had nothing but trouble with it.
If all the production kinks and design updates have been made I have been anxious to pick up an XDS45 again. It is GREAT when it is reliable!

When my XDs .45 was newly purchased in August 2013, I took it apart, cleaned all of the factory grease and oil off of it, lubed it, and took it to the range. This is what I do with any new gun that I purchase.

In the first 80 rounds of the day, I had two light strikes. I did some research online when I got home, and found that grease/oil/gunk in the striker channel could cause the issue.

I removed the striker, and found the striker channel packed with oil and grease. I cleaned it really well and reassembled the gun. I now have had 500+ flawless rounds through my XDs .45 after making sure the striker channel and striker were clean and not oiled at all. The manual even states not to lube the striker at all.

It was a learning experience. With every new or used gun I've purchased, I clean it really well and lube it before taking it out to shoot. I have not, however, removed the striker in any new gun to clean it. Lesson learned.

In answer to slamfire and meteorman, I purchased my XDs from a dealer, and it does have the "upgrade". It's interesting because I can't tell when it was done - it may have been returned to the factory by the retailer or his supplier. When I go to the Springfield web site for the recall and type in the serial number, the system replies, "your pistol has been returned to you". I don't know if that means it was done after being returned to them, or it's a stock answer for any pistol that has had the upgrade. In any event, I bought it NIB from a dealer. The serial number DOES fall in the range of pistols produced that need the recall.

You can tell immediately that the "upgrade" has been done by looking at the side of the grip safety. There's a newly installed roll pin that goes through the safety, side to side, just visible where the grip safety enters the receiver.

I purchased my XDs .45 2 days before recall. Without firing once, I shipped off to SA as per recall instructions. Pistol was returned roughly 10 weeks after receipt by SA. I was elated to finally get back the $650 investment which had never been fired once... however, upon first trip to the range my happiness soon faded. After some confusion, the range master and I realized the roughly 1/5 trigger pulls which resulted in 'non-fires' were caused by RTB issue which I'm now finding out plague this particular pistol. One quick internet search pulls up a lot of unhappy XDs owner entries. Also on occasion pistol will misfire although in battery. After cleaning and lubing I've put several hundred rounds through pistol and things don't appear to be getting better. So, here's where I am with Springfield - $650 expense, $20 packing expense and time killed FedExing for recall, 10 weeks burned during recall, a pistol I will not carry for personal protection and the trusty Glock 19 I've had for 15 years on my hip.

Does it seem that only the xds 45 are having problems? Or are the 9mm having problems too?

I was thinking about trading my g26 for a post recall xds 9mm but now wonder if I should pass on the xds all together.

I believe it is a .45acp issue. I recently picked up a new 9mm XDs and it ran fine [except for not holding open at the last shot. . . . which may be because my thumb riding on the slide release].

I only had a few rounds through my XDs 45 before it went back for the recall. Since it was returned, I've been very pleased with its performance. It's now in my carry rotation, where it belongs. I like having a 45acp firepower in such a compact package.

Didn't have any issues pre-recall. I need to take it to the range now that it is finally back.

Return to battery problems? I have only heard of it only with the .45s, and I believe it to be a shooter problem, not a gun problem, due to improper grip and a heavier recoiling pistol. I have the 9mm and it's becoming one of if not my favorite pistol, even with the heavier post recall trigger.

If you are referring to the recall, the vast majority of the pistols showed no issues, it was a CYOA move by Springfield to recall them all, and probably the right decision.

Both my Xds 9 and 45 have been perfect both pre and post recall. I have since had the factory custom shop install Yelllow ring Trijicon 3-Dot HD tritium night sites on them. I really like these guns.

Bought mine yesterday.

Took it to the range today not cleaned nor lubed from the factory. In 156 rounds of ammunition I had 2 FTF from light primer strikes. Both rounds went bang the second time around. I took the filthy gun apart when I got home and it had loads of crap in the breech, on the feed ramp, and in the firing pin channel. Some factory grease and black carbon was in the firing pin channel.

I lubed the slide and made sure the firing pin channel was bone dry.

I have a few hundred rounds of ammunition to try in the next few weeks so we'll see if the cleaning fixed the problem. I'm half tempted to order the stronger magazine springs just in case.

Maybe I'm over reacting?

Meh, I trust it thus far for carry.
