Hey guys,

For my birthday(today) I got a Remington SPS tactical in 308 (what a gift!). Now i need to to find out what factory loads it likes until I get into reloading. Any suggestions appreciated. Going to be shooting to 100 yrd 99% of the time at paper. I may use this for some varmint hunting when i go up north as well.

I also have a few questions about scopes and mounts. I think i am going to get the Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 SF with BDC for a scope and get Burris xtreame tactical rings and bases but I am not sure what height bases i need for this scope or if there is a better scope in the same price range. The options are low, medium, high 3/4, and high 1".

Once I get the rifle together I will get some picture put up along with a range report.

*note* still waiting on the rifle it was ordred from Buds gun shop.

Looking forward to your opinions.

if youre only going for 100 yards, then just about any factory load will get you there. personally i use Federal Gold Medal 168 BTHP for reaching out farther, and its done wonders. it will cost a bit more but its worth it IMHO

congrats on the birthday present. i wanted one very bad last year and they were all backordered.

Adam,
you should go to walmart and buy some cheap 14-17$ boxes of 150gr ammo, get a box of each kind (if they have any) my walmart has been out of stock for 2mo now, (in fact i went last week, saw they had 2 boxes, went to get some pitstick came back 3min later, BOTH GONE!!!) anyways, Use the cheap stuff to sight in the gun, and to get "brake in the barrel" I have 120rds through my gun, and it is getting better as I shoot. I save all my brass, and give them to a friend that reloads for me. I let him keep my .223 brass for trade...

I would then move to Federal SMK 168gr BTHP, or 175gr... and see what shoots best. My sps tactical 308 dosent like winchester ammo... it always has a few flyers, but anything else is good.

I just bought a one piece base from midwayusa for 15.99, Its cheap and it works for a 0 MOA base. This will raise your base, and scope up. so get the base installed with some loctite, and your scope and mesure your distance for your rings.....

and I just put a 700p HS precision stock on it from a takeoff.

If you are looking for cheap glass. I would recomend the Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20x50 with mildot, Its on sale now, but they go on sale every other month and switch the sale between the mildot and duplex... Its got good reviews for a 100$ scope...

I really dont know how usefull bcd turrets are for 100yds on paper. and for varmints depending on range I just use mildot holdover...

Anyways I congrats on the new gun! I love my sps tactical... I'm sure you will too! Hope this helps, just what I have learned along the way Im still new to this game too...

The 308 doesn't have that much recoil. You don't need those monster overgrown rings. Save yourself the money and just get a standard set of Leupolds, or Burris.

Why just 100 yards? Is your range limited? The 308 is capable of much longer distances, and so are you.

Hello,

Yes the local range is only 100 yrds so the only time i will get out further is when I travel elsewhere.

You'll have fun putting your rig together but you will get bored at 100 yards. It won't be long and you'll be looking for a place to strech your legs.:)

i agree, you will get bored at 100 soon. but if it hones your skills when you hit sub MOA groups, by all means do not be afraid to go farther. its good to set limitiations, but with the weapon you have, you can expand by far. go for 100, get comfortable, then expand on it. never be afraid to try for just a little more, you might suprise yourself

I too just bought a Rem 700 SPS Tactical in .308. I will be going out to the range tomorrow to sight it in, and will post a range report after!

Here is a pic of my 2 "toys":

Thanks for all of the post. Still waiting on a few thing but this is it so far. I attempted to guess what height rings I needed and I was way wrong. I will need to order some low rings but for now these will work. I will see how I like shooting with them before I order more. Please excuse the dog hair as I have a Siberian Husky and she sheds very badly.

Now for the good stuff:

Range Report will have to wait, had a snag this weekend and couldn't make it to the range, most likely this coming Sunday I will have a report!

the deadnutz mounts are the best.. Very underpriced in my book.. you would have to spend a lot more with other makers to get something that gets close to them.. No need for lapping.. fit is awsome and the hold EXTEMELY well,,,,,,, good product;)
