Square trigger guards?

Is there any particular reason for square trigger guards on a single action revolver? Some of the early percussion Colts, Ruger SBH's and .357 maximum BH's, and some BFR revolvers all have the squareback triggerguards but I've only ever heard complaints about them hitting knuckles under recoil. Are there any advantages to the square trigger guard or are they aesthetic/traditional only?

I love the square back Dragoon style trigger guard and have no problem with 'em on SBH's.

But I also grip a little lower so the gun doesn't slide in recoil, which kinda makes 255grainers maxed out as my threshold.

Can thumb left and shoot right, not changing grip.
Kinda handy when a family of groundhogs is coming up the hill (got 'em all!).

Also makes mover deer fun.

And yes, I hate Bisley frames.

People that get bonked by Dragoon trigger guards have out of the ordinary hands or aint holding the gun right.

Been shooting SBH's since I was in elementary school.
Never bonked.

Did get a tear in the web of my thumb/index finger from shooting 240 gr Keith load in a Flattop. Hate those little frames.

That's good to know, I've got a couple small percussion guns with the square back but my new Super Blackhawk is the first one that would have any sort of recoil. Haven't shot it yet, when these central Texas roads dry up hopefully I'll get to the range and fix that.

I think a 6.5+" singe six would look good with the square trigger guard.

For guns with heavy recoil, I prefer the Super Blackhawk grip, asevidenced by these .44 Magnums:

And these .45s:

The stag gripped .45 is an ex-Bisley, incidentally.

My dad put Stainless SBH dragoon style on all his stainless NM Blackhawks :)

What's the 'right' way to hold a SBH?

Dunno...

I never think about it when doing it...

I just know I don't get bloodied, whatever I am doing...

I did just pick one up with one hand and 'point it'...

Upon inspection of my hand position, my middle finger is nowhere near the 'curve' (top of grip), and forward I have more than a half inch of air between my middle finger and the trigger guard...

The style started with the Colt Dragoon guns (or did the Walkers also have it?).

They didnt bother my knuckle, but I dont like the way the gap between the tip of the trigger and the guard opens up with the square back. It pinches my finger with anything that recoils much.

I dont care for the wide flare at the bottom of the Super grips. I had a Super grip frame welded up some so I could grind it and make it narrower front to back at the bottom of the grip frame. I used the grip tracing from a Cassull as my guide and really like how it came out. I think the Cassull is the best feeling single action grip other than the Colt SAA and the standard Ruger grip frame. The larger frame grip helps some with heavy loads. I also filled in the square back guard, and really like that improvement. Need to make some nice grip panels before putting them on a gun.
