I presently reload for 3 pistol calibers using a Dillon SDB. It's great for what it does. However.

For my magnum reloads, I've become convinced that using a Factory Crimp Die may help me get lower SDs and greater velocities for the same powder charge. Can't do it with the proprietary dies of the SDB.

Also, I think my next caliber will be 45-70. So what I need is an inexpensive but durable single stage press that will allow me to finish my magnum pistol charges using a factory crimp die, and which is big and sturdy enough to be able to load 45-70 (probably for a Marlin).

So what are my best options? Thanks for your opinions and your help--
Chris

For the least amount of money the Lee Challenger is the best.I've done lots of 45-70 rounds on mine.
Anything else will be made of heavier metal and cost more.......and maybe flex less and last longer, etc, etc. the choices are many..
If you've ever thought about a 550b you might buy the stripped down version and add on as ya go .
A Lee turret press might be an idea too.

I have a Lee Challenger and Reloader, an RCBS Reloader Special and Rockchucker, and an old Lyman dunnowhatyoucallit. The rest of my presses are progressive. The RCBS presses are leaps and bounds and worlds past the Lee presses, not even in the same league, but the Lee Challerger works well and does fine. The Reloader is a total POS and barely makes a decent powder measure stand. Do you want to tighten bolts with pliers or good sockets? That is a little too extreme but gets to the core of the difference. Lee takes a miminal approach and the others seem to be hammer proof. The Challenger is the absolute MINIMUM in quality and construction to consider. Mine is used for decapping and some other minor chores. Lee does have the new cast iron press out and I can't remember the name of it (maybe the Classic?) but I think it is very definately worth a look. I plan to pick one up soon but haven't had a chance yet. The bullet swagers are liking this press and for them to use it and have it live you can be positive it is one tough press. It has a massive frame, massive ram, massive leverage and a big opening. I don't see what it doesn't have. It is about a third of the price of anything comparable too, so definately have a look at it. If the big iron Lee doesn't do it for you go for an RCBS or Lyman O-frame press. Keep in mind you can buy good equipment the first time, or the second, or the third........

EDIT, read SASS post above again and he makes a good point. It sounds like now is a good time to move the SDB to the next guy and pick up a 550, then all is solved. I have two 550B's and love them. Fantastic presses.
