Hello,

This is my first posting on here and I'm looking for an optics combination for a Stag 3G. I am right handed, but left eye dominate. I would appreciate any ideas/suggestions. Thanks!

You should be shooting left handed if you are left eye dominate.

Before we can recommend optics we need to know your budget and what you want to do with it.

I have shot the vortex, a couple Burris scopes and Trijicon and Leopold scopes in 3 gun. Currently I am using a Primary Arms 1-6x because I wanted the extra magnification without paying over $1,000.

For under $500, the Vortex, Burris MTAC and Primary Arms are hard to beat.

I can second the choice of a Burris MTAC. I've got both the 1-4x and 1.5-6 power scopes and the 1.5-6 is on my 3-gun rifle. Put a Switchview on the power ring and it rocks. I've used it out to 500 yards on the clock and done quite well. Used it at the Rockcastle Pro/Am and hit the three targets ranging 200, 260 and 300 yards in a total of 5 rounds using PMC Bronze 55 grain FMJBT ammo. For your price range, it's an excellent choice. I also prefer the reticle proportions and the extra magnification offered in the 1.5-6.

The 1-4 powered MTAC is on my SBR.

Thanks to all of the suggestions. After some research I have decided to go with the Burris MTAC.

One of the things that I noticed in my research is that are some scopes with a red dot on top. Has anybody used this method? Especially in 3 gun? Pros/Cons?

Definitely don't do it. No one who is anywhere near competitive in 3 gun mounts a red dot on top of their primary optic.

First off, having a magnified optic and a red dot on the same rifle puts you in open class (if you are already planning on shooting open then this isn't a negative).

Secondly, putting the red dot on top of the optic makes you change your cheek weld in order to use it. Big no-no.

If you want to have the red dot in addition to a magnified optic then mount it offset 45 degrees.

Like this:

Unless I'm mistaken, an unmagnified red dot sight is considered "open" sights and no longer automatically puts a rifle into "open" class. Red dots are allowed in "Tactical Irons" class and are considered comparable to open sights...faster, but no magnification.

Agreed with allaroundhunter that it is better to mount it on a 45 degree offset rather than on top of the maginified scope. Losing that cheekweld will cost you in speed for follow-up shots.

Which power MTAC did you decide on?

Yes, a red dot by itself will get you into limited or tac irons (whatever the given match wants to call it). But if you put that red dot on the same rifle that already has a magnified optic, then you are automatically in open class.

Ok, I wasn't sure about that. I kinda wondered what more it would take to get you into open class besides a large muzzle device (bigger than 1"x3") or a bipod.

I went with the 1-6.

That 1.5 - 6 will serve you well.

The main thing that I will recommend is that you get out there and shoot a couple matches before buying too much stuff. Run what you have for a little bit, then you'll be able to see what is limiting you. Your first couple matches are really just about learning the game and staying safe anyways, don't get too worried about gear that you don't have or anything like that.

If you have any questions about 3 gun or anything like that feel free to shoot me a private message. There aren't many big 3 gun guys here on THR, but I try to get involved in any thread about it that I see if my experiences in the sport can help.

Yeah I started to think that I needed to get this and that, then I realized just get something on there and see how I like it. I can always change it up later. It's easy to get bogged down when there's so much stuff out there which kind of leaves you with wanting to have everything when everything is not what you need.

Absolutely. The biggest thing that most people go out and buy are shotshell caddies... And then they realize that they would rather load twins or quad load instead of loading weak hand. That's another $200 worth of gear that is no longer going to be used.

What kind of shotgun will you be using?

Loading 2 is where things are now and heading to quad load if you can handle it. I started loading from a caddy and was resisting "load 2" because it takes so much real estate, but it's so much faster that it makes a HUGE difference. It's also easier to "master" than loading from a caddy.

Techniques and equipment are still quickly evolving. Be prepared to learn and change as well.

I really like what allaroundhunter said about your first couple of matches. Focus on learning the game and being safe first. Speed will come with practice and time. It's easy to get overwhelmed at first, but the more you compete, the more you learn and become familiar with your limits. However, first and foremost, have fun.

Oh, good choice on the scope. I REALLY like mine. It took me 5 attempts to get the sighting system right.
