Stag Bird & Trout for a Friend

A couple of weeks ago I asked my friend Teresa about trading for a flashlight she had and she turned around and just sent me 2 lights! Well, I had this CPMD2 Bird & Trout blank laying around and thought "Hmmm".

I had stag but it was too short for the handle - so I drilled hardened CPMD2 with a carbide end mill (only took me two!) and made a bolster and pinned it on. Then I put the stag on, and today ground it down and finished it.

I must've took 50 pics but none really show this knife as nice as it is!

Thanks guys! This is only my second try with stag and I finally realized you have to thin it from the bottom BEFORE putting it on - or like on my first one all the "good stuff" gets ground off. I still ground too much but had to to show the pins.

I may send this one for pics, to the same guy that got me in Blade. The problem is I don't want to make more of them!

You are correct! The secret of working with stag is working it from the bottom. Good selection doesn't hurt either. Best to buy stag at shows if possible.

Don't get it photographed if you don't want to make more!!

Yea I haven't been to any shows so I have to order Giraffe Bone and Stag over the 'net and it sucks - I'd much rather pick it out in person. One of these pieces was all curled or cut crooked or something and I had to thin the heck out of it.

If it does get in Blade I'm going to say $500 to make more!

I've shared this with you in private, now I am going to post it publicly.

That knife, downsized to ~ 4 1/8" would be a really neat pocket carry fixed blade.
3 " of handle, the rest being blade, and of course a Lifter's Sheath....

01 , which I know you do well, or 1095 .
The new D2 you spoke of would be neat as well.

Slimline Trappers are 4 1/8" and pocket carry real nice.
This "should" be legal in a lot of places.
Something a lady or gent could carry, and handle a lot of everyday tasks.
Stag, could be presentation, heck add a blank shield for engraving initials.

Green Micarta with 01 would be my choice, like I said, I know very well how your 01 works!

Personally, I am a pocket knife and fixed blade kind of person, always have been.
I am finding more and more folks that are like me, or becoming like me, in this respect.
Your Small Skinner is another I know would work downsized as well.


For those that do not know, I have a Small Skinner in 01 with Micarta.
Valkman's work is top notch !
Clean lines and feel great in the hands.
Craftsmanship , fit and finish and sharp!
Lifters, does nice work, and the knife and sheath compliment each other.

I have certain notions about knifemaking and right or wrong it's what I base my work on. That doesn't mean they can't change - I never thought much of Bowies or Fighters and now sell a ton of Bowie Fighters!

But knives with short handles are a pet peeve of mine. Like neck knives - if I can't put but 2 fingers on the handle I want no part of it. But your idea merits some thought. I actually have 2 blanks that are kind of what you're talking about - I am making them for granddaughters 5 and 7 so I scaled them down. Have to see how it works out!

Now where can I get Spongebob handle material?
