Stag Grips On Dbl Action- Why Not?

Why do you rarely/never see stag grips on modern double action revolvers,do they not shoot well?

I'll rephrase. Is there a downside to stag compared to wood or rubber? I'm referring to how they shoot.

No downside that I see when comparing stag to checkered wood.

I don't particularly like the from the pocket draw or feel that I get with rubber. So for me, stags are superior to rubber.

Stags along with a T-grip works well for me, and the bark gives better purchase than smooth micarta or wood. BTW - I sanded the shine off of my stags with 600 grit.

Staghorn stocks were quite popular during the 1950's and '60's, partly because they were much less expensive then ivory. Pearl almost never came into consideration.

They're attractive, and in my view there are no negatives if you like them, but because India has cut off much of the supply of staghorn the cost of stocks has skyrocketed. Also the current style of fingergroved styles doesn't work too well with this material.

I had some on a .45lc New Service. Wish i still had them. How would they be on a magnum revolver though? Smooth stag looks nice too.

I agree, stag grips do look nice. I think they look their best on bright nickel, chrome, and stainless steel; especially on Colt SAs and large frame Colt and S&W DAs. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned, they're priced now close to where ivory was a number of years ago, with no end to price escalation in sight. Also consider now with the internet and online auctions, sellers can reach a lot more buyers than they could in the past. I would say if you're interested in stag grips, buy now before they're priced out of reach.

Thanks for the replies, I've found that stag (elk) rolls well yet most want the "tactical" look, I guess I'm getting old.

Thanks for the comments guys! The stag pictured is not elk horn but is the real thing...Sambar Stag from India. It is more dense and not as porus as elk horn.

I'm not a photographer and actually do nothing for a living...retired 10 years ago. Now I just enjoy deer hunting and playing with my guns.

And yep, I definitley carry the top one, the 642-1. I bought it new in October of 1997 and have carried it daily.



Of course stag is cool on bottom feeders too
