Stalking - Scout-ish rifle

I went with the Ruger GSR with composite stock so it was already a done deal. Meaning the way I wanted it. Way lighter than laminate. A tikka with a bell and Carlson stock would be an excellent combo. I got the 18 inch barrel. I think 18-20 is about right.

wolfshead, you must be close, you used “cny” and not upstate. I am near Syracuse to the east. The only bass pro I know is Auburn or Utica. Each about an hour away.

Well I live in NY and Walmarts here don’t sell as much ammo as they used to, at least where I live.
The ones that have any didn’t have any 308.
We used to have a Gander Mountain but that is gone now.
Runnings has ammo but no 308 and only half dozen boxes at max of the different calibers each they did have which wasn’t much really.
Bass Pro is over an hour away and they might have had it but I did not make the journey out there….
Was able to pick up two boxes online for a good price (except for shipping) so that’s covered to get its first shots and sighted in then I’ll handload for it myself.
I don't know how much you travel but some of the other states near you may be better. NY and Massachusetts were terrible when I lived in CT. Going north to NH or others would be more fruitful than going south in my experience. I didn't reload when I lived up there so I have no suggestions in that regard.

I really wanted a Ruger GSR but they were hard to find and on gunbroker they all began at $950 so that was a little out of my price range.
I got the Tikka for about half that and it fits what I was looking for.
Not a GSR but it’s gonna work very well!
Yes, I was referring g to Auburn, I’m in Cicero

Then let’s meet up some time. I am more South East. Not too far from 481, 690, and 90. I got my GSR when they were cheaper. You can’t go wrong with what you got. It was a win no matter how you look at it.

I agree. I put a 1-4 on the mini. On the GSR I went 4-12 power. Both mounted traditional. Setup can be expensive and failure can result in loss of funds. Plenty of setups you can duplicate. What they don’t or can’t say if you will like the setup.

Sounds like a plan, we should.
I’m really happy so far now to get out and shoot it.

I have a Ruger bolt action ranch rifle in 7.62x39. I have it scoped with a Nikon 3X32 and carry a TRS 26 red dot in my pocket if the scope goes south. I bought it solely for deer hunting in the woods, but if I were thinking scout or all purpose rifle, this would work up to 200 yards with ease. Actually, my marlin 336 in 30-30 will do anything this Ruger will do.

My walking/stalking rifle, a Ruger M-77 RSI in .243. Plenty handy and has a European flair to my eye that only a Mannlicher stock provides. :)

That Tikka will make a great walker/stalker as well!

Stay safe.

I agree on the Mannlicher stock, mine is a Rem M7 in .350RM:

This one was actually killed while "stalking":

As much as I like the MS stock, it's out for Cerakoting now and I've got a Manners carbon fiber on order. As it sits now with the laminated MS stock the total package is just over 8lbs. The Manners will bring it down to just under 7lbs "all up".

The .350 RM makes one heck of a pig rifle.

7lbs? I bet that will be an easy-carrying stomper for sure! I always liked the .350, that stubby little round slinging 200-250 grain bullets always seemed like a cool combo in the Model 660 and then the Model 7.

I never picked a .350 (or a .35 Whelen) up though, and with todays ammo hassles I don’t think I will anytime soon. (Plus I really don’t know what I would use one for that I don’t already have covered by the .35 Rem, .45/70 on the lower end and 7mm Rem and .300 Weatherby Mags up high.)

Great gun and nice pigs!

Stay safe.
