Check-out BERSA-Llama.com, I've got both , I Love the Llama's,
I have a .380 and .45 good guns, cheap price, both gotten for less than $200

Having kids around is cause for concern. However, with a Mak there's an easy way to reduce the potential problem: replace the stock 17# recoil spring with a 21# recoil spring. Still functions 100% w/less perceived recoil but takes a good amount of hand/arm strength to rack the slide. Leave it in Condition 3 (loaded/inserted mag, chamber empty w/hammer down) and all he has to do is rack the slide to chamber a rd and he's ready to rock w/o having to worry much about the kids being able to load one in the chamber.

Helwan Parts

I tried to buy some parts from Helwan in Cairo... no luck... not interested or even polite.

You might want to consider the CZ52... a fairly powerful gun with cheap ammo still around at around $100 to $125 or so. Very solidly built.

FWIW

Funny you mention that. I have a CZ40B that is my bedside and carry gun. I love this gun. Anyways, I have a 22# recoil spring in it. It is downright difficult to rack the slide for a youngster. Anyways I ALWAYS keep this gun in condition 3 when it is under the edge of my bed, because we do have kids coming to our house occasionally. They are not allowed in my room when I'm not there (lots of tools and dangerous chemicals or sharp things, it doubles as my workshop) but if they did get in there, there's no chance in hell that they could rack the slide. I had my 12 year old nephew who plays sports a lot and is pretty strong, try to rack the slide. He couldn't. I think that's safe enough, especially since I don't really leave it lying around unwatched. If they are 12 years old or older, they know better anyway. We teach them about gun safety at that age.

As for the Makarov, my brother-in-law isn't going to be buying anything for a while it turns out. His wife works from home as a writer for some web magazines and some print magazines. She was working late at night on a piece that was due by midnight. She had over 14 hours of work into the paper when her youngest, 3 years old, pulled the plug out of her computer. The document was lost, and she wasn't able to start over and finish in time, so they didn't pay her. I guess they were counting on that pay to get through the rest of the pay period until by brother in law gets his next paycheck. They also needed it for some deferred maintenence, so they won't have any money for guns for a while.

Anyways I wish I could buy that Makarov, but I don't really have the money. I just bought a stock for my shotgun and it was like $120. If I wouldn't have done that I could have afforded to buy the Makarov for my brother in law. I knew I should have left well enough alone with that shotgun! :fire:

Now every time I enjoy my nice fancy shotgun stock I am going to think of my brother in law sitting in his home unable to protect his 7 kids should anything happen... grr...

If he isn't responsible enough to secure any firearm he has had in the past, don't jeopardize the kids. If it is in the house, no matter how well you think it is hidden, you can be sure that at least one of those kids will find it eventually. Before you give it to him, go out and buy a combination lock pistol box for him and make sure you tell him not to let the kids watch him open it.

If you really think he is responsible enough, and that he needs a gun, just buy him the **** Mak someone was gratious enough to offer you on the cheap. All this stopping power and grip size hot air is a bit much to take. If he learns to shoot the Mak, and hits his target, it will do the job. If he can't afford to buy ammo to train, take him out to the desert to shoot on your tab. You have a 22 right? If not, buy a Walther P22. They aren't target guns, but they are both cheap and fun.

So,,,I'm slow.....
Don't spend much time on this forum. Was researching whether some holsters I'm selling will fit a particular firearm and this thread came up.
Sounded like the thread was started by a troll anyway. :)

If you need a firearm for an inexperienced or experienced shooter for home defense, you really want a revolver, .32 or .38. They have few performance problems in the time of need. With kids in the house, the guns have to be secure and in a theft prone neighborhood, store your gun in a site the kids can't get to but you can. A decent used .32 can sell for $50 or a little more
in most areas and late models are available all over and sold as C & R guns with very little paperwork.
