I’ve been under the impression the Shilen barrel was new, albeit old stock, is that correct?

Shilen hand laps their barrels. If new, I’m not sure I know what polishing a polished barrel would achieve?
yep new old stock. I didn't know shilen lapped anything besides their top end barrels.....goes to show how well I read.....

Myself as well - I only buy their stainless barrels, which are all hand-lapped, but apparently not all of their chromoly barrels are lapped - just those they install. Not sure if that includes their short chambered barrels sold to Brownells or not - might take a couple phone calls to confirm/correct:

the only thing you'd do is screw it up
Thats very likely either way! :D

So we were all right....
Just got off the phone with Shilen, and they CURRENTLY lap ALL barrels. This started about a year or so ago. Before that it's exactly as they say in the site, ALL stainless match, and any CM installed by them.
Mine, and any other short chamber CM barrel older than any year or two will not have been lapped.

Shilen does laps their barrels so the only thing you'd do is screw it up.
Most likely not. Hand-lapping is surprisingly easy, straightforward and very difficult to screw up unless you ignore all the principles, use wrong equipment and materials and generally don't give a rat's behind about how it should be done. All it takes is patience and ability to follow instructions. The first time I did it was without even a bullet casting furnace, pouring the lead tap from a kettle on a bronze brush into an insufficiently pre-heated barrel, used valve grinding compound as abrasive and STILL managed to shrink group sizes from 4-5" to <1" and reduce fouling drastically.

Factory lapped barrels vary from decent to excellent. Time costs money in manufacturing process so there are variations on the theme and lapping is best done once the barrel is cut to length, with a resistance gauge on the lapping rod to keep the bore tight precisely at the muzzle.

It's not magic, it's fairly simple science combined with some elbow grease.

My dad had good results with fire lapping some nasty barrels.
done that a few times too, wares out the throat tho so it's usually a last resort.....well last resort if I'm not willing to get a rod and pour a lap, which I've actually only done twice I think.

actually that brings up a question. When lapping how much of the front of the barrel do you cut off. both guns I hand lapped were Mosins that got cut down to 24" and 25" So I've never figgured out how much you actually NEED to remove.

that's how I've done it in the past, Ive only ever lap barrels that were really bad tho.
I've tried to refine my technique over the years, ranging from the worst Norinco can throw at you to fine tuning benchrest barrels. If you start with a quality barrel there's usually no real need to lap it and you'll have to weigh whether small improvements are worth the trouble.

MoS2 as a finishing touch but found its benefits to be marginal and even debatable
Sorry ment to say that I've read mostly negative comments by gun builders and barrel makers on moly coatings, so never tried them.
The positive comments usually come from users, and from what I've gleaned, if your gonna do it you have to stick with it.

rigs assembled. Using a Bushnell Legend UltraHD 4.5-14x44 to sight, cheap cvlife bipod.....fits the whole "low cost" theme...
Honestly the UHD is the only scope I have thats long enough to use standard rings on this thing, well that isn't already mounted.
The pods been sitting on my bench for a couple weeks...so I guess you could say they fit the "I have it, and I'm lazy" theme.
Now to get ammo and see how it shoots.

I like the color Looks good, I never used any of the legend scopes. How are the eye relief on them?
I've never measured it, but I THINK this one list right at or just under 4", which from experience it achieves at 14x. Even with the thing full forward like that, which is the only way to get it on the gun, I still have a full sight picture without crawling up the stock.
the 1.5-6 (I think) I had, was about 5" that was the only one that felt ok on my .375 before shortening the stock and putting a full length rail on.

That's good for a Bushnell. Only problem I've found with them.

I don't lap barrels, just shoot them "in". If you don't do it correctly, it's worse than not doing it.

Looking forward to the range report ...
Hope she shoots good, can't wait to see how you paint it.
Ive actually had it to the range to burn some factory ammo for cases, shot off the bipod and my kias hood it held 1/2" or better at 50yds....in the pouring rain.
Im honestly expecting this one to shoot well.
Down side to THAT outing is about 50% failed to fire. Im not positive it if was just that when i put the bolt back together i got the pin screwed too far into the rear...thingy, and it was bottoming out on the cocking stud, or if the springs weak.
I read justed the stud wasnt bottoming out on the bolt body, and the pin stroke was stopped by the front of the pin assembly like it should, then measured firing pin protrusion which was .35ish. All the primed cases I had popped after that, but I ordered a new wolf spring anyway.

Still deciding on color. My buddy will be helping me on this and my Ar. I THINK they AR is going to end up gray, black, blue, and header paint orange....This one will likely be more sedate.
