I have been looking at the Pietta 1851 Sheriff and would like to buy one with a steel frame in 36 cal. They seem to be hard to find though the model with a brass frame and 44 cal are readily available. I recent put in a special order request from Cabelas, so I see how that goes. Do any of you own a steel frame 36, and if so how/ where did you get it?

Pietta Model 1851 London .36 Caliber Revolver, all steel, excellent fit and finish, very nice!

Arti, thank you for the links. I was unaware Uberti also made a 1851 .36 with a 5 inch barrel. I found one on The possible shop website. I am waiting to hear back from Cabelas see what they can do on price.

I like the Pietta 1862 Colt NYM Sheriff model, if I get a discount email from Cabela's I'm going to pick one up.

OK, got a Uberti 1851 Navy .36 cal, 5 inch barrel on its way. I will post pics when she arrives.

Thanks for the heads up Fingers. Figures this would pop up after I ordered the Uberti. But I will keep on eye on it. These Pietta .36 Sheriffs are hard to come by, the .44's not so much. I contacted Cabelas and was told they can not special order from their foreign suppliers.

Just bought a Pietta 1861 Colt Navy .36 cal, wanted a 62 but this was local and comes with a bunch of spare goodies.

This gun listed on GB is not an 1862 Pocket. An 1862 Pocket would have a rebated cylinder which this one doesn't have. It is an 1851 Navy .36 with what looks to be a 5 1\2" barrel.

My Uberti 1851 Navy, 5 inch barrel, in 36 cal showed up on tuesday. I ordered it from the Possible Shop and it shipped the same day. Great service. I have not shot her yet but hope to in a couple of weeks.

I have seen both .375 and .380 ball available for these 36 cal BP pistols. The manual gave load data for both, but made no recomendation as to which size ball to use. What is your expeience pro and con of the two ball sizes?

From what others have reported, the Pietta's have tighter chambers and can use either .375's or .380's, whereas the Uberti's really need the .380's.

What Arcticap said. .375s are tooo loose in my Uberti's. Literally had one fall out of the chamber once. Colt recommended .378s for the 2nd Gen 36s. .380 can be had from a number of sources. Log Cabin Sport SHop usually gets my business.

Thanks for the info. I have another question regarding conicals. I have seen them in .375 will these work in the Uberti or do I need to try larger conicals?

That's difficult to say with certainty.
There are ways to bump up the diameter of a projectile.
Smokin'Joe mentioned one way to do that below in post #10 titled Knurl Conicals:

Others have mentioned methodically compressing/squishing their projectiles with a press to increase their diameter. And there's the possibility of paper patching them, or loading them in a paper cartridge or using a card or wadding over it. Some may be swagged to fit the chamber snug as they're loaded.
Every conical type is unique and different.
It's somewhat easier to slightly enlarge a mold. The thread above mentions a couple of methods.
You will only need to find one conical that will work satisfactorily. One should be available with the correct dimensions which hopefully someone will help you to discover it. :)
