Hi,

I have searched and read everything I could find about the budget hunting rifles. Stevens 200, Marlin XS series, Savage Edge, Mossberg ATR etc.

Half of the time the articles are showing the Stevens 200 as having a two position safety but then sometimes I read that it has a three position with bolt lock.

Which one is it? Could someone please let me know what safety a new Stevens 200 would have?

The safety issue is enough to change my decision on which rifle to get. The Marlin has the better trigger and comes with a scope mount, but if the Stevens has a three position safety that would win out.

Thanks!

I just picked up a new S200 a couple months ago. Your question intrigued me, so I checked. My S200 does have the three position safety. Full back locks the bolt, half back keeps the trigger locked, and off is as normal.

Pics could be available if needed.

The Stevens 200 has a 3-position safety. The "button" is not quite as big as the one on the Savage branded rifles, so it's slightly harder to manipulate (esp. when wearing gloves).

The "locked bolt" that a 3-position safety offers, I feel, is a big advantage when it gets dark out (and you can't see the position of the safety) and you're wearing heavy gloves. You can verify the safety is on by tugging up on the bolt (and feeling whether or not it's locked).

I have to say, the thing I dislike the most about the Marlin is the 2-position safety. Otherwise, it has a nicer stock and nicer bluing on the receiver and barrel than the Stevens.

Thank you both very much! No pictures are necessary but thanks for the offer IronLance!

I wish Savage would actually advertise this feature on their website. I feel it would be to their marketing advantage since no other competitors at this price point have that same feature.

Based on this information i'm going with the Stevens 200. Otherwise it would be the Marlin but the bolt lock is very practical.

Thanks again!
