Hey guys,
I've been semi-considering getting a bolt action sporter to "replace" the .308 Mauser I just bought.
Although the Mauser needs a little tinkering to be perfect IMO, the real reason I want to get something else is because I want to add a scope. Rather than go hacking on a cool .308 K98 complete with military furniture, I figured that I'd be better off to just sell it and buy something already set up to be what I want.

Enter the Stevens Model 200.
I've owned Savages before and they were great rifles. The Stevens seems to just be a Savage with absolutely no frills, including no accu-trigger.
The stock is cheap synthetic that will be too flexible - I know this from the ones I've owned before and I'll probably wind up replacing it anyhow.
Seems an awful lot like the Savage Model 11F EXCEPT without the iron sights and the accutrigger.
For me, the iron sight issue will have to be remedied. Even the most basic iron sights can still make a rifle with a damaged scope useful until I get another scope. OTOH, no sights means that without a scope, the rifle will essentially be useless. Not good IMO. For me, this is a big deal.
Also, no accutrigger.

My questions -
1. Anyone got an estimate on how much it would wind up costing to have similar sights to what's stock on the Savages installed on the Stevens? If it winds up costing about as much as the 11F after having sights added, I'd be better off to just go with the 11F in the first place.
2. Is the accurtrigger good or bad? How durable is it? Will it hold up to years of use as well as a regular trigger?

Any help on this would be appreciated.

It will cost more to have sights put on the Stevens. And it seems that people who haven't shot a lot love the accutrigger, and old school people who love Remchesters hate it. I've liked all of mine. It will last as long as any trigger. I've got to ask, how many rifles have you had crap out because you had a quality scope give up on you?

None.
But as long as I have a good set of iron sights backing my scope up, I'll never have to worry about it.

I don't worry about it now. A quality, modern scope will take a shocking amount of abuse. And plus you have a built in reason to buy.............the back-up rifle!

This one will be the back up rifle.
I have one .308 already but it's not legal for hunting in my state. It would make sense to get another .308 to share ammo and reloading components.
I originally bought the Mauser as a back up but it's just not suitable for that, mainly because it's too cool to take out and hunt with. I also can't scope it without having it drilled. Although it doesn't have any collector value, someone would no doubt value it more as a cool shooter than I would as a hunting rifle. It also needs just a little tweeking to make its reliability perfect IMO.
So the best option is to just sell the Mauser and buy something suitable for a hunting rifle.
Right now, I'm considering three options:
1. Get a Stevens and do some upgrading
2. Get a stainless Savage and have sights installed
3. Get a lever action Marlin 30-30 for $200 or so and just use it until I decide what I really want to do.

The Mauser is on Gunbroker as we speak so hopefully before too long I'll have money to start one one of these courses.
