What would be the most viable home defense load (the home being a typical suburban sheetrock and wood interior) in an 18" coach gun like the Stevens 311?

Would it make any sense to have different loads in each bbl?

Inside the house any load you want to put in the gun will work just about equally well, from a skeet load of #9's to 00 Buckshot. I once had an emergency room physician tell me that the worst trauma he had ever seen was a man shot breaking into a house. He caught a load of 7 1/2's in the shoulder, and it ruined his whole day.

People get religious when it comes to what the "best" defensive shotgun load is, so I won't get into that. I will, say, though, that in my opinion you should have the same thing in both barrels. If you don't, one of them will always be the wrong thing.

#2 non magnum loads make sense indoors as penetration is adaquate to reach vital organs, and it won't go thru walls very well!;)

Here's the loadout I have for my Stoeger Coach Gun....

1st. load in the chamber-- 2 3/4" #4 Remington turkey load.

On the buttcuff-- 2 #4 Remington turkey loads, 2 S&B 00 Buck 2 3/4", and 1 Remington 2 3/4" Slugger load.

On the bandolier-- 10 S&B 00 Buck, 10 Remington #4 turkey, 3 Remington Slugger loads (plus a Ruger .357Mag Blackhawk & 40 rounds of .357Ma ammo)

And if there's TWO intruders, I'll run back & get more ammo...
