A local stores has a Steven model 238 20 ga bolt action for sale.

I was think about buyiing it and shortening the barrel, maybe adding sights, to make a gun for short range hunting using slug loads.

Or is this gun too rare and too valuable to bubba this way??

As far as I can see it is all in original factory condition. I know over on the rifle side, the locals are more than ready to get out their pitchforks and torches to run off anyone that even suggests modifying a 'matching numbers' rifle, even something common like a Mosin Nagant.

Your opinion on chopping a bolt action shotgun???

What you are doing is probably the best use for a bolt action shotgun. No matter how uncommon a particular model is, there is just no collector interest in them. They are usually perfectly serviceable, but they are terrible for most traditional shotgun uses like wingshooting.

"Rare" and "valuable" are seldom terms associated with bolt action shotguns, save perhaps for the TarHunt offerings...

Sounds like fun! Buy it and do as you will with it as it will be yours.

Would be kind of neat to take Bambi's folks with a gun you "made"

I like his Cousin Earl's work better than Bubbas......take your time and do a good job that does not involve duct tape in its final form.

Yes, some of the brethren on the rifle board do get a little anti Bubba, and some here even cringe when the single shot break action shortening society gets going around here with 18.5 inch barreled H&Rs and such.

Be safe, but have fun.
