I took out my Steyr M9-A1 that I picked up today and shot 200 rnds, after cleaning it. Here we go.
Reliability: Excellent. No problems at all, pull the trigger gun go boom.
Ergonomics: Good. Comfortable grip, slide release and mag release very easy to reach. I am not used to the sharp grip angle of this pistol so, if I did not make sure that I dropped my wrists down a little I would shoot high.
Trigger: Good. All my other pistols are DA/SA so this is a new system to me. Pull was light, I would compare it the SA pull on my P99 that I brought along to compare. Short pull and reset, but with the trigger safety that I am not used to using, it was very hard for me to know when the trigger reset.
Sights: Different but good. They seemed like peep sights were if you place the tip of the front triangle on your target that is were you will hit.
Ejection: Very weak. All rounds ejected, but only about 1ft or so. Many rnds came back and bounced of my arm or shoulder. I have been told that because these pistols have been sitting for a while that I should disassembe the slide and clean the ejector tube as oil and what not may have solidified there. That is my next step.
Mags: Holy Superman, Batman! I thought my P99 mags were tough to load, these things have some stiff springs. I was using an HKS loader, but do to the Steyr's small baseplate they did not fit correctly. I now have two blisters on my right thumb from the mag loader paddle.
Summary: I like it! While it does require a little bit different manual of arms on my part I am very happy with my purchase.

Actually this is pretty common ... put another couple hundred rounds through it and the problem will likely go away. Just need to break it in a bit more.

I predict that the more that you shoot it, the more that you'll like it...

I tore my new M9-A1 down and cleaned it completely before shooting it the first time...

Ejection of fired cases was about 8-12 feet from the gun...

Never a malfunction...

Wonderful in the hand...

I really like this handgun...

When the range i go to got these guns in, I rented the 9mm and 357sig and liked them both ALOT -- except for that triangular sight :scrutiny:

Nice to see yours works well! Congrats on the well behaving pistol! ;)

I placed an order for Steyr in 40.

Is it possible to shoot 357 sig from Steyr M40-A1 with a change of barrel and/or magazine?

I seem to recall similar possibility with a Sig.

Welcome to another Steryoid!

First off, glad to hear you had a good first-time experience with your Steyr!

Second, as other have said, clean it, shoot it, and you'll see the ejection problems disappear. I have several thousand rounds :what: through my S9, and just adore it. It is my primary carry piece.

Third, if you don't know about it, then head on over to the Steyr Club for lots of good info on these guns, tutorials on cleaning and trigger polishing, holster info, good discussion and friendly folks. It's a great resource.

Lastly (and you can confirm this over on the Steyr Club), I'm pretty sure that converting to the .357 sig from the .40 S&W is pretty simple on these guns.

I honestly believe that this is a superior pistol to a lot of what is out there, just has been very poorly marketed here in the US. And you can get 'em for about half what you'd pay for most comparable quality pistols.

I signed on to Steyr Club. Thank you. There're some useful tutorials on cleaning, and on disassembly, and extractor removal, etc. I'm sure there's plenty of other useful info there. Won't be getting my Steyr 40 until September due to CA wait period laws and fact I just had purchased a Walther P-1. One must wait 30 days between handgun purchases here.
