So I replaced the riveted extractor and some of the brass extracts, while others won't, well not very reliably.

Here is what I've discovered. The head on 7mm RM is supposed to be .532". I randomly selected 30 pieces of brass that has been reloaded at least 6-8 times, the heads range from .523" - .529", but none are at .532. Those that are smaller than .526" extract unreliably, the larger one's all extract 100% reliably time after time.

So my first question is why did the case heads shrink, or is this a common variance with 7 mag case head?

The brass I used for this test is mixed, some Fed, Win, RP, and Frontier. BTW, the Fed nickel is all consistently smaller, mostly .523" and none larger than .525".

Further more, my older 700 doesn't have a problem extracting the smaller case heads. I'm stumped and open to any thoughts as to what the problem is.
Has anyone else ever experienced this problem?

I measured it and compared it to the one in my older 700 and they are nearly identical to within .0005" or less. And I bought two new one's just in case I broke one during install, so I compared the old one that I thought was the problem, measured the same as well, other than a small chip on the edge.

Do you have the skills and tools to do a Sako style for me? If so, what would you charge me to do it if I provide the kit? I live a little over an hour from Mesa, so I could bring it to you.

@ Gamestalker
I would have to see what all is involved.
I Have Skills, but I am a gunsmith, but not a Licenced shop.
I am more than willing to help friends fix their guns, or help them with advice on what repairs are needed.
Sence I am Not a Gunsmith Shop, I can offer help and not be encumbered by the Bottom line Profit margin that is required to work as a Business.
I do this kind of work more of a hobby, and love to help others.
How far SW are you in AZ. ?

If you have not, I would call up Remington Customer service and discuss extractor size. It is possible they have extractors of different widths for belted magnums.

I got one for you!

I deer hunt with a Rem 270wsm, model 700 composite. I find that my gun has problems only when i am shooting deer. It will not flick out the empty cartridge case, making me take my eye off the game and lower my rifle to use my hands to pick the case out. Now we can go to the range and shoot all you want and it will eject every time. I have killed more deer with this rifle than i can count. I kidd people that i just point the muzzle in the general area of the deer and squeeze the trigger and they drop dead. But i swear it is like shooting a single shot, during deer hunting. I have had this rifle worked on by a few reputlie gun smiths and they do not see it. I think it is more me than the rifle, maybe i don't cycle it far enough, maybe i am just going to fast in the heat of the battle, i dunno. I have tried making it stick and can't??? But come this deer season i know it will stick, it always does. I have had this rifle for 10-15 years and it always does it, its a real head scratcher. If it wasn't so acurate i would retire it.

Ya, already spoke with Remington and I do have the belted mag extractor, so nothing wrong there.

I'm now thinking that maybe the extractor button spring might be weak? And I also noticed that the extractor doesn't fit snug into the grove in the recess, so maybe it's tipping when the bolt is pulled back during extraction? All my other 700's don't have any slop in the recess, so..

@ Gamestalker.
Those are the exact things I wanted to look at.
If you NEEDED a Sako Extractor to make your rifle shoot right, then Remington would have redesigned their rifle already.
Yes, almost everything can be improved, and there are better mousetraps.
But the 700 is a fine functioning rifle from the factory.
Why mess with it.

A recap of the history surrounding this 700 as to when the problem started and how it presumably was caused, as follows.

My Son came back from Afghanistan in 2008, Thank God, Anyway, the next morning he went to SWH and bought this SS 700 in 7mm RM and picked up several boxes of factory ammo, so he could take it out and shoot it right away. The very first round and the bolt wouldn't open, it would lift, but it wouldn't pull back and extract the case. So rather than give me a couple minutes to get a rod out of the car, he beat on the bolt handle to get it open. It came off the case head, but the brass was still in the chamber. By that time I had come back with the rod and easily tapped the case out. From that day forward the extractor has been hit and miss. Any resistance at all and it wouldn't hold onto the case head, it just slips off.

So fast forward to present. Since I shoot that rifle more than he does, cause he works all the time, I'm retired / disabled and love punching paper, so it's been driving me crazy, so I ordered and replaced the original extractor. It's better, but it's still not consistently grabbing them.

So what I've observed and think may be happening is, when he beat on the bolt, it rotated the extractor up and lifted the lip of the recessed groove it fits into. I say this because, the extractor has a rather sloppy fit ion the groove, rather than the tight fit it should have.

Now, if I can get it working 100% I'll forget about the Sako retro fit idea, I just want the thing to be 100%, my son on the other hand could care less. Other than this minor extractor issue this rifle prints 1/2" groups @ 100 yds. consistently, with just about anything I load for it.

It sounds like you may have a rough chamber issue also, that is Holding the case, and allowing the bent extractor to slip off the rim.
Was the Bore CLEANED before the first round was fired ?

Crap, I think I could have saved myself a lot of hassle and head ache if I had thought about the recessed groove being expanded before replacing the extractor in the first place. After I posted earlier this evening, I took a round nose punch, so as to not chinger up the beveled ring of steel, and I walked it around the area that encompasses the extractor, thus closing the gap so the extractor is held down snug. And what do ya know, problem gone. Everything extracts like it's supposed to. Funny thing too, I seem to remember having the same issue years ago with a 700 extractor, just not a riveted style.

As for the chamber being rough, no, just my son using his military training and regard for grit and sand, it don't matter to him. In fact, we were taking about that today when we were in Sportsmen WH, they teach those guys to just flood their weapons with CLP when they get gritty, instead of cleaning them properly. And i might be getting old, but I clearly remember him dropping one of those boxes of ammo in the dirt, and it spilled out onto the desert floor. He's a big goof, but I love him anyway.

Thanks everyone for your patience and suggestions!

I don't know who taught him that, but they need to be flogged! I've got 33+ years in uniform and I was never taught that. If I ever caught anyone teaching that, I would kick their a$$! That crap will get you hurt or killed. Please re-educate your son on proper weapons care and maintenance.

ya, I hear you loud and clear BBBBill. I thought I had taught him better than that, but he got retrained when he joined. Now days however, he has been paying more attention to me and even passing it on to his soldiers on the firing line. Just the other day he told me he had chewed one of them a new one for substituting CLP for a proper cleaning.

Lag, I was in SWH between 3:00 and 4:00 I think, but in Tucson. They didn't have any 22lr either. But, Murphy's had lots, and all kinds, and also 17 hmr and just about everything else too.

@ Gamestalker.
Yea, I was at the one in Mesa by my house.
Do you ever shoot at the public range south of Casa Grande ?
