Original container and screw the top on. The stuff seems to be very tollerant of long term storage. I've shot a little 90 year old stuff stored under unknown conditions in Arkansas. I would expect that was almost a century of extreme temperature swings involved.
On a related note, we found one of the first lot of pyrodex cans last year partially depleted, recorked and lost in a garage for 25 years. It was about 50 fps slower than a new can but just as consistent. Definate extreme temperature involved here.

I'd think humidity would be more worrysome than temp swings. I live on the gulf coast. I keep my powder in the AC, but I haven't had a real can of BP in 30 years. I shoot pyrodex by necessity.

What about area? Can't exactly store cans of BP under the bed....

I live in England and you can't get wetter than that!
Rules for the storage of blackpowder here have recently been rewriten and the old requirement to lock it away in a steel container has changed to using a compartmentalised wooden box. The steel box is judged to be a bomb whereas the wood box offers less resistance in the unlikely event of an explosion - so the theory goes. The Health & Safety bods have apparently had much fun experimenting and blowing up garden sheds!
To combat the damp weather over here, I store the powder in its original plastic container which I place in a anti-static polybag with a sachet of silica gel. Probably over-the-top but powder is expensive ($58 per 2.2lbs).

It is wet over there and the grass grows. I told some guys in a pub that the sheep and goats over here eat the grass down to the ground and then eat the trees as high as they can reach standing on their hind legs.

Try telling that to sailors who fought at Trafalgar! Can't see the difference between Shrapnell and Wood Splinters! Anyway, unless you have to lock that magazine away somewhere else I doubt it could stop a kid of 1 month old from getting into it!
At least here in France you can store it and carry it anyway you like!

I see now that here in the States we're lucky on prices; $10-$12/lb for Goex.

What a ripoff, I need to start mail ordering the stuff. Valley gun in Baltimore is even higher, they want $30 bucks for a can of H777

I store it on the shelf of a cabinet above my loading table. All my powders are in the same cabinet,along with points,dies,empty boxes,and loading manuals. Primers are in a file cabinet next to the bench. Which also has drawers full of loaded ammo. I store all powders in original containers.
I live in a rural area served by a volunteer fire dept. They have a do not fight order on my workshop,which means they will not enter or vent the building but will stand back and pour water on it.

Sicilian // wow prices are high in B-more .. i use to be stationed up there in 71 on a big white boat on Curtis Bay .. in fact it was the gunny on the boat that got me into shooting the black stuff .... Sportsmans Warehouse here in Memphis gets 14 bucks a can for goex .. when they have it ..which isn`t very often , lots of cowboy club shooters here , and black powder clubs ... Man I sure miss the crab cakes and beer up there !

Right on! We have the best crab cakes and a lot of good micro breweries up this way. Baltimore Brewing makes the best German styled beer around, bar none! I think some of the prices are high more because of greedy merchants rather than high prices in Baltimore. Some people want to make too much damn money
Can't you get any fresh blue crab meat down your way? If you can, I can give you a really good crab cake recipe for Maryland crabcakes? Sheesh! I bet the guys will rib me for offering crabcake recipes on the high road! Maybe if I modifiy the recipe to allow for a pinch of Black powder? that should shut em' all up! I think I just might eat some cakes for dinner tonight, since you brought them up...yum yum!

If you're having trouble finding real Goex powder ya might want to get you're friends together and chip in and buy in 40 pound lots from Coonie Coyle Explosives in Hobbs New Mexico...he's probably the largest wholesaler/retailer in the country for pyrotechnic, military and sportsman-type powder and his prices are far better than any store or mail order outfit.
His number used to be...505-393-0166...try it and if its not correct call information!
I've met him personally at professional fireworks conventions and he's a great old character...a Louisiana Cajun!!!!!!
I don't know what his prices are at the moment but when all the stores here were charging $8 a pound for BP he was selling it for $4 in 40 pound lots in any mixed graduation ya wanted. (this would be in standard one pound Goex cans)

This was over 10 years ago but I'm sure his prices will still beat anyones off the shelf prices when bought in large lots. I'm pretty sure it was in 40 pound lots but it might be smaller...give them a call and see.
Federal law allows private citizens to own up to 50 pounds of black powder w/o any license or storage restrictions but local laws might prohibit you to lesser amounts so be sure to check that out also.

I think Maryland law prohibits any more than five pounds at a time which is entirely not enough!!!!
