stranded on an island ,one gun

You want a small caliber round, otherwise you are not likely to have much ammunition.

A .22 could be nice, but not a .22LR. You do not want a rimfire cartridge, you may get creative and a round that can be reloaded by hand is better. For that reason I would want a centerfire round.

For that same reason a round that has dimensions that can also effectively use black powder which you could make over time with what nature provides would be ideal.

Shotguns are great, but they also use a large amount of projectile material and powder for given energy figures. For that reason only a smaller bore one would be suitable.

You may think you want a large capable caliber, but most of your concerns will be food, and the larger the caliber the less ammunition you will have when you become stranded.

For immediate use I think a nice pump airgun in a caliber suited for small game that is rugged and reliable would be best. The ammunition can be made from improvised items if you run out, and the power source is free compressed air you can continue to compress as you need it.
You could hunt small animals for as long as you kept the thing running.
Backed by a magnum power handgun for defense against man or beast that you never fired and conserved the ammunition for. That would be my ideal setup for being stranded.
Both together with ammunition would take up less space and weigh less than the single selections of many people.

If the selection weighs too much or is too large it is not likely to be with you when stranded anyways, or have been replaced by something more convenient prior to you ever needing it.

I'd just want a gun and caliber larger enough to safely fire me and my loot back to my mountain stronghold.

Any gun?

An 80cm Gustav.

That would probably get the attention of passing ships. Or satellite imagery.

M4 Sherman DD.
That counts, right?
Oh, and lots of gasoline.
(for those of you who don't know, the Sherman DD (duplex drive) is the one that can swim.)

and a truck full of ammo tracers would be fine to sign the ships or planes

I dunno about you, but If I saw a guy on an island, waving an AK around shooting....I dont think I would stop to see if he needs help

I heard that in WWII, some naval dude's primary weapon was a flare gun with magnesium-based flares. 4,000* a pop, good for starting fire, signaling ships, or melting the innards of any unfortunate creature that crosses your path. I'd take one of whatever the hell that dude had, in a nice waterproof case, with plenty of rounds.

I figure that if I melt enough wildlife, I'll have food and irritate PETA, who will come get me (and then I can eradicate PETA and steal their ship). Or I could set the island on fire, which might get someone's attention.....thousands of miles away. And, in a pinch, I could melt anything that threatens my life.

Or, maybe a Single-Six with a chunk of ammo, or a .44 with lots of Special and Magnum rounds. But since this is the Rifle forum, maybe an SKS--reliable, strong enough.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of o fateful trip. That started from this tropic port aboard this tiny ship.......

For those who don't remember the Skipper had a Garand in the first few episodes.

maybe so...but if you see this

you may stop, plus if you see a straight line of tracers going straight up (and not right at you), it may give you an good idea where you can find me or for the love of god...call the police, coast-guard or the UN but call someone... ;)

No one would choose an SKS and a bandolier full of loaded stripper clips? Probably a good choice on a south pacific island, as long as I had a machette, a fire-starter, and my Swiss Army knife...

Hope I end up in Bora-Bora! :D

Really, stuck on an island without human enemies, a rifle is about the last thing I would want. There're at least 9000 things, including solar powered satellite phones, that'd be way more useful to have instead.
If we're not allowed to cheat and have something like that phone, then I'd want a machete, parang, bowie knife or something like that over rifle. A burning lens or other easy-to-use fire starter would be better than a rifle. Assuming there's no spring or other source of potable water on this island, plastic sheeting for making solar stills and/or collecing rain is way, way more likely to let me survive than any rifle. A fieldguide to the edible and medicinal flora of the region would be better than a gun, too.
I mean, what use is a gun when there really isn't anything that needs shot? If I'm absolutely required to pick some kind of a gun, then I want a stainless steel .22 magnum bolt action with synthetic stock and with rugged peep sight. Non-detachable magazine preferred. Throw in a few thousand rounds of ammo, fmj will do.

that's right it was a Japanese rifle, and the professor made some seaweed bullets W/ coconut casings for it.

M6 in .22/12 ga with crates and crates of ammo. .22 for medium range shots at small game, slugs for big game, shot for birds and everything else, dragons breath to start a fire, and oh yeah... 12 gauge flares!

A shotgun is the ultimate survival tool.
