Finding it very strange, I sent an e-mail back in which I basically stated that I was skeptical. I got the following reply:

Hello,

Anyway you are a seller and you have to talk the way you feel. Am 65 years of age and am not here for games Okay. I can only send you a Certified Cashier Check, Once it's cleared your bank then we can move further Okay. Do not worry about the shipping, Me and my Movers will be coming to pick it up and everything will be done over there Okay. I want you to name the Price you are selling it and let me have your full name and Information where the check will be mail out to. I will be waiting cause I want to leave out of town to see my daughter in-law who gave birth to a new baby

Waiting on you,

I replied with an address to which he could send the check that wasn't my home address, but one at which I can get mail. He then replied with:

Thank for the response I am very much interested in buying it and Take it away from that sites Okay. Your Cashier Certified check will been mailed out soon and you should be getting it in some few business days via FEDEX. I'll want you to know that check is sent is an over payed amount as the remaining will be given to the mover's as the pick up charges.. I hope I can trust you on the excess balance. as I believe I am transacting with a trustworthy seller. Regarding the shipping/pickup, I'll be contacting my Shipping Company to come pick up the item after you have your fund, Once my shipping Co come for the picked up, everything will be duly sigh and the sales of bills..I will like you to know that am hearing impaired and i do not have a phone number,i can only call you through my PC.

I'll get back to you with the tracking details soon.

Hope to read from you.

Sorry for so much to read, but what do you all think? I'm not concerned right now about personal danger or anything, but what about the potential legal issues? I need to hear what you all think... Your opinions on the situation, yes, but MOST IMPORTANTLY the legal implications of this (Ohio). Should I require a face-to-face transaction or a mailed copy of a state ID card? Perhaps this is just a typical scam that I don't know about? I need help!!! LOL

lol...

The "me and my movers" part is cracking me up. Seriously.

Good luck with deciding if this is fake or not...

p.s. google, nigerian scam if you're not joking. :)

It's a classic "Nigerian" or "419" scam.

The odd capitalizations are an easy clue.

While your bank may "cash" that certified check it will undoubtably come back weeks later as a fake........and your bank will debit your account to cover it.

Classic counterfeit Cashiers Check scam. They send a phony but genuine looking Money Order or Cashier Check to an online seller of pretty much anything, for an amount in excess of the selling price, and have you send the merchandise and any overage by Western Union Money Order to a foreign address. When the phony check bounces, the seller is out the merch, the overage, and any penalty fees his own bank charges for depositing a bad check. Run away.

Scammy. You'd be out the gun and whatever you'd pay the "movers" out of his check. That's why I never buy or sell stuff via auction site (particularly ebay).

It's a scam like others have stated. But you can have some fun with the guy. Do a google search for 419 pranks or jokes. Some interesting stuff.

I used to deal with people like this by telling them to meet me at the my Dad's work---which was the FBI building in downtown L.A., just across the street from the U.S. Superior Court House......

But my father is a prince's king's uncle's cousin to some important person. Can you please import $6,000 to my account so I can free him so that he can free my important person so that he can free my brother who owns the gun?

Cash only. :uhoh::neener:

These scams violate dozens of Federal laws.
So why not hand it over to Federal investigators and play along.

The investigators will take custody of the instrument (the check) and let you email the suspect that it's all good. Of course you have to email the bugger, because of the deafness thing, you know.

And they won't know that you didn't cash their 'cashiers check', simply because it is counterfeit. They'll receive no notification of the transaction.

When Me and My Movers show up, the Feds bust them.

To have some fun, tell them you're kinky.
They must show up naked, with clown face paint, wearing pumpkins on their feet.
Only then will you hand them the gun and cash.
Be sure to have your camera handy, this is going to be good... :p

This is the part that tells the tale.

If you want to have some fun with this guy, write back and tell him that you require a wet-ink signed copy of a Class 01 FFL to ship the gun to, per Federal law.

If doofus sends you an FFL, go to:

www.atf.gov

and check the validity of the FFL. There are links that show you what to do. If it comes back fake (and I think it will) or if the guy tries to weasel around the FFL requirement, call ATF Enforcement, and let them have their way with the guy.

I got something similar, but I thought it was the ATF

After describing on this board how a co-worker with ALS sold me her gun, I got a private message from someone in New York who wanted to buy that gun. It didn't make sense why he would want to buy THAT gun, but he wanted to do it without going through the hoops for an interstate sale. He also made a point of telling me his life story, emphasizing that he was "cultured," and of telling me how he wanted to bury the gun to keep the police from knowing he had it.

I thought it was an ATF sting. Maybe it was an internet scam.

Ah, well.

This is why I always do face-to-face, cash only, bill of sale. No exceptions. Firm. Already licked the spoon.

Let the Big Boys, aka, the atf, handle the entire situation.
Forget the guy, it is a scam and it should definitely be reported to the authorities ASAP.

With out a doubt!

Umm...at the end of that Powerbook prank...they're saying that "Jeff"...the kid who pranked the scammer is gone. No one can get ahold of him. That's kind of disturbing!:what:
