I ordered this bayonet from numrich awhile back, and it's stuck in the scabbard and I haven't been able to unstick it.

It's been long enough that I don't know if numrich would take it back, and I really don't want to hassle with that anyway. The description on their site did list them as being in "used, good to very good condition", instead of describing them as stuck in the scabbard like a sword in a stone, so I'm not happy about that.

I've tried hitting both the scabbard and pommel of the bayonet on a piece of concrete, with no luck. Any ideas on how to get this thing out of the scabbard?
thanks

If you can get it out does a lady come out of the water and make you king?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I agree, Kroil soaking.

I sprayed some rem oil on it, but it didn't work. There's not much of a gap between the scabbard and bayonet, and I don't know enough of it leaked down in there.

I don't have any other oil at the moment either.

What does the tip of the bayonet scabbard/sheath look like? If my reading is correct, I wouldn't strike the pommel on anything as that will only drive the scabbard on tighter (if I am reading that correctly)??????

Do you have any type of vice? I could get those things apart, but I have the technology. You're going to need one or the other locked in one spot (preferably the scabbard), so that you can work the other away from it. You could even try and heat up the scabbard to expand and loosen the hold.

Put some heat to the scabbard if it is steel it should expand it a little. Than use a rubber mallet to knock it loose.:)

Or toss it in the freezer if the scabbard is not metal. Worked for me trying to expand or shrink brake sleeves on aircraft landing gear :D

There's another product called PB Blaster. It is specifically designed for this sort of thing. You can actually see the rust sluicing away when it's sprayed on a stuck bolt head. I've used it many times. WD 40 will also work. Just takes a little longer.

Its probably cosmoline causing the issue

You can put it in a foil baking pan and heat it up in the oven at low temperature(but it will stink) and the cosmo will melt away

One place where WD-40 is designed to be used...

NOT, there appears to be no need to remove water from electrical equipment anywhere in his post. It's not a lubricant.

+1 on PB Blaster, that is similar to what that stuff is designed for.

WD-40 WILL unstick the blade in the scabbard whether it is held by rust, dried cosmoline or dried leather(depends on the scabbard material). I used WD-40 on my 1916 Enfield scabbard (leather)and blade to keep it working smoothly. It did a fabulous job!

Liquid Wench and a rubber mallet available at any hardware store.

Are you sure the bayonet wasn't tack welded or brazed to the scabbard for use as a display item?

Penetrating oil is designed to get into those little gaps and lube stuff up anyway.

Another vote for the PB blaster, that stuff will un-stick things you never thought were coming apart again.

Is the bayonet extremely valuable? (if not stuck in the sheath, that is)
Are you sure it is in the right sheath?

Get some pipe that the scabbard will fit into up to the hilt. Plug one end and fill it with the wonder product of your choice. Let it sit for a few days. It will get in there. Also you should post a pic of the rifle it goes to. Just for fun.

it goes to a yugo 24/47 mauser

I think I will try the PB blaster first, and if that don't work, it's on to a torch, napalm, a vice, and a sledgehammer. If it still doesn't come off, then it can just stay in the scabbard, and I'll use it to bludgeon stuff instead.

I don't have any PB, vice, torch, etc. here though, so I will wait till next time I go back to my parent's house, so I can just borrow all my dad's stuff, rather than paying for can of penetrating oil I'll only use once.

thanks for all the replies

Only once? until you need to use it again you mean? I can see you on that day some time in the future looking at a rusted to hell nut on something that needs to come apart shaking your head and saying "three bucks to buy a can of that stuff and now I'm gonna have to go make the trip to the store for it anyway.."
:neener:

Well said my friend. It's not limited to boomsticks, there are a ton of uses for that EARL.
